Besides being a serial womanizer, Don Draper should be remembered for the humanity he brought in his ability to communicate in marketing. Generally speaking, communication between two people is already prone to be complicated and messy. So, in marketing, when we automate it, add stakeholder opinions, make it a one-way dialogue, it mostly falls flat. As such, tons of people think that marketing is either a load of **** or simply not effective. Marketers mostly try tapping into the basic primal drivers of humans, such as desire, excitement, rewards, fomo, etc., just to snag attention for seconds and seed memorable brand associations. And, while there is some merit to that, this is the playbook when you go wide and shallow vs deep and narrow, and it lacks the human touch that Don Draper always brought. That’s because marketers take something already complicated and messy and scale it to massive audiences while whitewashing most of the profound human elements, such as humor, vulnerability, curiosity, connectedness, etc. My sense is that the cultural forces are changing and people are aching for deep and narrow. So instead, I believe that brands would do better to begin exploring ways to connect more profoundly with their market on a more human level, which in turn could produce outcomes such as advocacy, retention, permanence, and profitability. Just an early morning marketing idea 🤷♂️
