Yesterday, to mark R U OK? Day, we hosted a staff BBQ at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane to encourage our community to come together, share a bite to eat, catch up and maybe have a life-changing conversation. A national day of action, R U OK? Day is an important event that’s purpose is to remind everyone that every day is the day to ask "are you okay?" and start a meaningful conversation with our peers. It’s an important reminder to check in on those around us and reassure one another that we are genuinely here to listen, because we understand that a conversation has the potential to transform lives. When doing some research I saw that September 14th was National Sober Day and I think as a company it’s important to mention. Lots of corporate events revolve around having a free glass of wine or a beer, having a casual meeting in a bar, or celebrating a victory with a drink. This can be very damaging for a lot of people and someone (especially if they’re new to the environment) might not want to look like an ‘outsider’ or bring up a topic they may feel is taboo. People go sober for many many reasons and it’s not always a big deal, some may need support to help stay sober, some might just not like the taste of alcohol, or choose not to for religious reasons. It’s part of their culture and welcoming new people into your office, you need it to be a safe space where people express their lifestyle choices and everyone is accepting. It means "a banquet, feast, or gathering", and it was used to describe the social events where people enjoyed food, wine, and conversation in ancient Rome. Convivus was more than just a meal. It was a way of life, a philosophy of living well and sharing joy with others. The Romans believed that convivus was essential for human happiness and well-being. They even had a god of convivus, named Convivialis, who was associated with Bacchus, the god of wine and festivity. By putting the social connections at the forefront, convivus focuses on the most important part of a gathering, the people. It literally translates to living together, but not how we think about it today. It isn't about roommates or partners, it is about sharing our life with people. Today, we can still learn from the wisdom of convivus. In a world where we are often busy, stressed, and isolated, we need to reconnect with the simple pleasures of eating, drinking, and talking with friends and family. We need to cultivate a convivial spirit, a sense of warmth, generosity, and hospitality. We need to celebrate life and appreciate the gifts of nature and culture.
