The Disability Services and Inclusion Act 2023 (the DSI Act) commenced on 1 January 2024, replacing the Disability Services Act 1986. The new Act introduces a mandatory code of conduct for all Commonwealth disability services, strengthening quality and safeguard arrangements for people with disability. The Act also allows the Australian Government to fund supports and services outside the National Disability Insurance Scheme, to help ensure the right supports are available to all people with disability. Some people report being overcharged a "disability tax" (paying more than other people for the same service because they are NDIS funded). At the same time, many disability providers are considering how to continue in business because their margins are so tight. I'm assuming these are different businesses. People with disability deserve the support we need to live a good life. Businesses need enough revenue to pay their costs and stay in business. If they close, that will REALLY shrink the NDIS. It will put the wellbeing of disabled people and those close to us at risk. Realistically, a lot of the financial costs will be shifted to the health system - and be higher. The human costs could be enormous.

Information for Victorian providers! Did you know that when a disability worker or employer reasonably believes that a disability worker has engaged in notifiable conduct, they must make a notification to the Victorian Disability Workers Commission? If the notification is in relation to a registered NDIS provider, the VDWC must then notify the NDIS Commission. Great to hear Bill Shorten is serious about implementing ALL recommendations from the NDIS Review. This is the first of many to come. Are your participants fully aware of the complaints process within your organisation? Are you aware that you can not limit anyone from accessing your services? It also appears grants are back. All Providers MUST hold a "Certificate of Complaince" if providing high intencity care. All regulated activities MUST comply with the "National Standards for Disability Services" Breaching the "Code of Conduct" or "NDIS Code of Conduct" may result in restictions being placed on a providers registration or even cancellation of their registration. All providers MUST have available at all times a an "Incident Management System". Are you compliant? How will these changes affect your business and service provisions?

🚨 A Plan to Increase NY Disability Benefits Appears to Have Failed! Shocking many NY legislators and advocates, the plan to increase NY’s mandated Short Term Disability Benefits (known as DBL) has been removed from the state budget over the weekend. After weeks of negotiations, no increases to the program were approved, with budget bills omitting the previous proposals. Gov. Kathy Hochul had included this proposal in her State of the State address and executive budget earlier this year. 👉 The program, which currently offers $170 per week as the maximum benefit, has not been increased since 1989. That said, many of NY’s surrounding states have mandated programs with richer benefits – many of them exceeding $1,000/week.
