As part of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, Ford Philanthropy is celebrating AAPI leaders making an impact in their communities. This week, we’re featuring Thanh Tran, the driving force and Founder behind AccelerateKID®, Kids+Entrepreneurship+Tech and the Executive Director of Accelerate4KIDS Foundation, which focuses on bringing a diverse range of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM) programs to Southeast Michigan. Read on to learn how the popularity of Minecraft inspired Thanh to create opportunities for kids to immerse themselves in computer science: https://lnkd.in/gfq43me2 #AAPIHeritageMonth

Safeguarding, not manipulating by a foreign polluter. Our hospitals are crying out for staff, yet we see our children being influenced and offered apprenticeships by an overseas company whose operation creates emissions that will severely impact the health of future generations and their planet. In Sussex, local schools are allowing Gatwick into the classroom – permitting access to vulnerable children, influencing them into thinking that aviation is glamourous, and encouraging them to visit the airport on the pretence of learning about science, technology, engineering, and maths. This is simply promoting to our young, impressionable children that jobs should be sought in an industry that is one of the major contributors to global warming. Quoting government: ‘The Green Jobs Taskforce launched in 2020 to set the direction for the job market as we transition to a high-skill, low carbon economy. The taskforce concluded in July 2021’ – so why not use greener forms of energy and transport to educate future generations, so that greener thinking is encapsulated from the outset – rather than promoting cheap leisure holidays and “flying is ok”, when we know it is not? The Taskforce group detailed the UK’s ambitions for green jobs: · the skills needed to drive a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic · the skills needed to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 · how the UK can ensure green jobs are good jobs, and open to all · how workers in high carbon-sectors can be supported to transition to the new green economy. https://lnkd.in/etxb5bwj Yet local children are being wooed by a commercial airport that seeks a new runway which will add anything from 0.5m-1.5m extra tonnes of carbon every year, plus greenhouse gases – from a second runway alone. Hospitals, including Redhill, are offering apprenticeships – but will students seek these positions if we allow the brainwashing of our children now to an industry portrayed as glamourous? Will this be encouraging them to study STEM subjects to save lives? Statutory guidance suggests that our vulnerable children should be protected from outside influences; they should be shown safeguarding when it comes to the commissioning of education and training. So, is it appropriate to allow young minds to be so influenced by a commercial airport when the industry in question (as with this Sussex airport) is struggling to decarbonise? CAGNE suggests that places of education would do better directing STEM education towards greener forms of transport or the retrofitting of homes with alternative fuels. This would aid our transition to net zero, sustainability for employment and longevity of careers, as suggested by the government’s own task force.

NO PROBLEM IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL! Northglenn High School STEM practices Problem Based Learning (PBL) where we give our students in every class authentic problems and then the students propose solutions to those problems. All of our classes and teachers use PBL to inspire students and solve problems. We have noticed that when our students are provided with a problem from an authentic partner that students take their solutions to the next level. That is where you come in... We want your problems! Go to the website below and browse the different ways we have partnered with different organizations then use the "give us your problems" tab to share any problems we can help you with. There is no problem too small or too big for our students and staff. For example of previous problems, please check out our website below. https://lnkd.in/gNvY78k4 If you have a problem for our students, you can submit them using the Google Form: ➡ ➡ https://lnkd.in/ghFUmACX ⬅ ⬅ Thank you for the time and your expertise. Participated in Seoul Tech Impact Hackathon! https://lnkd.in/gxC4ckrf My last hackathon was 2017, so I tried to participated in more. My team developed korean out-of-school youth support system, and I am currently working on this project in person. slide is here. https://lnkd.in/grUUaM84 The main problem of Korean Out-of-School Youth is lack of information that youth don't know existence of support system and organizations. So I tried to inform these informations to youth and fix the myth about out-of-school youth. I was the only person partcipated in this hackathon on site, so I needed to speech this slide. It was hard but really good experience for me tho. My hackathon experience before this event was really terrible as a beginner at that time, so I tried to help my beginner teammates. It was really nice to develop korean social problem's solution with foreigner teammates, and having talk with people who participated in these event! Thanks for organizing this event Josie Daw. Thanks for let me know this event Jeong Won YOO.

Last weekend, I was able to join a 3 day Hackathon organised by UC Women in Tech Society (WiTSoc), CompSpc, ProdSoc and Entre. My team (Angelica S., Philip Dolbel, Caleb Westbury, and Conor Eager) and I, can proudly and humbly say that we were able to achieve 1st Place. Our solution addresses SDG Target - Supply Chain Sustainability. What's special about this hackathon is what we were able to achieve in the span of 3 days. With the intention of bringing our solution into the world. Our app, SustainAware, enables daily consumers to scan barcodes of products. Once scanned, the app will show bite-size information about the company's sustainability practises such as environmental impact, ethics/labour and many more. With the use of this app, we hope to give power and transparency to consumers that will hopefully influence their own practises. If you thought this app is super cool and you'd love to see it in action, please don't hesitate to contact me or any from my team to support us. So far we've had awesome feedbacks and we look forward to continue this business model. I would like to personally thank the various club that brought this hackathon into action, our mentors (Lisa Donning, Jen Stevie, Dinuki Karunasekera and Pete Howard) who all made this hackathon 10000x more enjoyable, as well as to sponsors Blackbird and Partly (Claudia Mansell and Ollie Chick) for lending us their magnificent work-space (AND supplying us unlimited drinks and snacks!!!!!!!! LOL) **Note: I've added a portion of our winning business pitch on my profile under Portfolio. Though I've removed some slide to keep some information private (because WILL MAKE THIS APP SOON!!).
Over the weekend, WiTSoc together with Entre, UC ProdSoc and University of Canterbury Computer Society (CompSoc) held our 2023 Hackathon! We couldn’t have done this event without Partly and Blackbird, as well as all the talented mentors that spent their weekend with us, so a massive thank you for all your support! Thank you as well to our amazing judges who had to make some tough decisions when the pitches were presented 🙌 Participants worked together in teams to come up with solutions to improve supply chain sustainability - they discovered new decision-making techniques, attended a laughter-filled pitch workshop and learnt that a hackathon doesn’t actually have to involve coding! Thank you to everyone that participated in the Hackathon - it was great to meet you all and we hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did. The ideas you came up with were so innovative & creative, and we hope to see you again next year! 💭💡

What a lovely morning conversation yesterday with Mxolisi Nkutha for Gifftid and Loyiso Chuma Mtshontshi, Ziyanda Siyabulela M. , Director of International Partnerships at Ubuntu Inclusive Centre, Communication and Media Lead Ubuntu Inclusive Centre. Lots of interesting topics came up: - how do you catalyze capital towards education and early childhood education? - how can you streamline reporting when each donor has their own requirement and standard? - how do you connect the donors’ intention and the beneficiaries’s true interest? Looking forward to meeting again #impact #CatalyticCapital #impactreporting
