Maui Wildfires: This is a challenging time for many people who were forced from their homes and have experienced significant losses due to the Hawaii wildfires. Many people are looking for help and trying to locate loved ones, while others are actively trying to find ways to help. As we assess the full scope of the damage, here’s what you need to know about our response and the available support: ➡️ How can I locate a missing loved one? If you are looking for a missing loved one, our disaster team might be able to help. Please call 1-800 RED CROSS and provide as much detail as possible to assist us in potentially locating your missing loved one. Deadly wildfires have prompted massive evacuations on the island and left roads inaccessible. Shelters are open and welcome anyone needing food, water, a safe place to stay, and other support. When the Pajaro River levee breached in March 2023, news organizations from across the country flocked to Pajaro to cover the disastrous flood. Thousands of Americans saw photos and footage of Pajaro residents wading through flooded streets. News organizations focused on the dramatic impact of winter storms on a working-class agricultural region. The problem was: This news was not useful — or even intended — for the residents. Most Pajaro residents speak Spanish or Mixteco. They needed clear information about evacuation orders and how to get government aid. That information was incredibly difficult to find. In July, Santa Cruz Local launched Noticias Watsonville, a local news division for the Pajaro Valley. It’s audio news, in Spanish and Mixteco, delivered for free on Whatsapp. We continually ask Watsonville area residents: What news and information do you need? How can our news be relevant for you? Half of our 16 audio episodes have been for Pajaro residents on flood recovery topics such as: - How to access aid.  - Upcoming government meetings on recovery and how to get involved. - Repairs to the levee. More than a year after the flood, we are the only news organization that remains in Pajaro, delivering critical news in Spanish and Mixteco and responding to residents’ needs. In the past few days, we received a $12,500 donation from Cristian Heredia to support Noticias Watsonville. Cristian is a Bay Area resident who wants Latino communities to get the news and information they need to thrive. Because Santa Cruz Local is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Cristian’s workplace was able to donate a matching gift. Cristian is one of Noticias Watsonville’s biggest supporters. In the past year, he’s donated $25,000 to grow Noticias Watsonville through his company’s charitable giving program. His support helped us build Spanish news for the Pajaro Valley. Bolt Kenya has teamed up with the Kenya Red Cross to aid relief efforts following the recent floods in #Kenya. If you have not followed the news – heavy rains and flash floods in Kenya have left hundreds of people dead, injured and missing. More than 150,000 people have been displaced, and close to 2000 schools have either been closed, relocated or otherwise affected. In partnership with the Kenyan Red Cross, we have already donated Ksh 5 million directly, but have also launched a dedicated "Flood Assist" category. This allows our customer community to contribute towards our goal of raising Ksh 10 million. The 2021 Marshall Fire near Boulder was Colorado’s most destructive and costliest wildfire, burning down more than 1,000 homes and causing $2 billion in damages. Researchers analyzed donations sent through the crowdfunding site GoFundMe to people who lost their homes in the blaze Wealthier people were more likely to have a GoFundMe campaign started for them. People with household incomes above $150,000 received nearly 30% more money, on average, than those with incomes below $75,000. Some Marshall Fire survivors received more than $60,000 in donations, while others received less than $5,000. What's more, federal disaster aid doesn’t fill the gap.
