The American economy is still the largest and most important one in the world and it is electrifying at a pace we have never seen before. Building a resilient and reliable grid requires all of us to work together. Permitting reform is essential if we are to continue being the world leader we currently are. Coordination between Federal, State and Local governments is critical so all electric utilities, and especially public power utilities can build the grid future generations of Americans deserve from us.

Delivering reliable and affordable energy while meeting clean energy goals requires maintaining, upgrading and expanding electric infrastructure. LPPC members invest significant resources in critical infrastructure, but the existing permitting process can result in project delays and cost overruns. For example, it can take ten years or more to permit new high-voltage, long-distance transmission lines or to relicense an existing hydro-electric dam. Without congressional action to reform the permitting process, America’s ability to benefit from reliable, affordable and clean energy is at risk. "Digaunto Chatterjee, vice president of electric engineering at Eversource, offers a thick wad of numbers and calculations along with the complaint that many customers and legislators want to ignore people like him with a master’s in electrical engineering, who do distribution and transmission engineering for a living. “You think the grid doesn’t need to be upgraded?” he asked rhetorically. “If you have a peak demand of 5.2 gigawatts and you’re going to be adding four gigawatts of electric demand on top of the 5.2, I think it’s delusional to not understand the amount of distribution infrastructure that will need to be enhanced.” I cast my vote for Digaunto's insight as being the one timeless fact in this article. #energy #electrification

Today the NSW Government published the "Electricity Supply and Reliability Check-up" by Marsden Jacob Associates with 54 recommendations, and its response accepting 50 of the recommendations. The responses are grouped into three sections, one of which focusses on Eraring Power Station (examining reliability and price).
