IT #system #failures have caused repeated problems, and even been linked to a handful of patient deaths, at #NHS hospitals in England, according to a report by BBC News - an #FoI identified a series of problems with #EPRs. The worst being that three deaths in two trusts had been related to EPR problems. Others were that 89 trusts had logged instances when patients could be harmed due to problems with EPRs, almost half recorded instances of potential patient harm linked to systems, nearly 60 reported IT problems that could affect patient care and there were 126 instances across 31 trusts of serious harm linked to IT issues. In addition, more than 200,000 letters across 21 trusts were not sent due to IT problems. https://lnkd.in/e8TuS_J4

Length of stay times for emergency department patients who are discharged (not admitted or transferred) differs widely between states, per recent Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data. Since ~80% of ED patients are discharged, DC-LOS is a legit marker of ED flow. A few patterns in this data: - Rural states tend to have shorter ED lengths of stay than do their more urban counterparts. - EDs in politically redder states tend to be more efficient than EDs in politically bluer states. - Emergency department efficiency has worsened since the pandemic across all US geographies. For blue states, this data indicate that regulations (such as certificates of need) should be liberalized, allowing more supply of emergency care. For all states, the CMS data show that hospital, behavioral health unit, and skilled nursing facility capacity should increase. ED flow problems are primarily a result of exit block. #emergencymedicine American College of Emergency Physicians American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA)

In a recent American Journal of Emergency Medicine article, results of an emergency department-based program that provided screening of health-related social needs (HRSN) and subsequent navigation support for high-risk patients (high ED utilizers) were discussed. The HRSN assessment and navigation resulted in a 10% reduction in ED utilization in the subsequent 6 months, even with only one third of identified HRSN being successfully resolved. Interesting innovative program that has potential for even more. Is your organization doing HRSN or Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) assessments and following up? What have you seen happen? Surrey Memorial Hospital to get new acute-care tower, health officials announce A new hospital tower is always good news, but the good news seems to be lacking some details..... Where is the business plan? What is the building budget? When is the timeline? Where are the engineered drawings? Where are the extra medical professionals to staff? What % of the budget will be covered provincially and municipally? P.S. make sure to get a helipad included. It really helps with closing the time gap on the "golden hour" for air transport emergencies.
