➡ The WBIF Operational Board endorsed on 8 December a €680 million investment package to support five flagship investments in rail transport and renewable energy in the Western Balkans. The package includes €253.2 million in European Commission grants from IPA III, favourable loans from international financing institutions, and contributions from the Western Balkans. The five new projects approved cover the following two priority sectors: ➡ Sustainable transport: reconstruction of Corridor VIII railway line in Albania and rehabilitation of Bar – Vrbnica railway line in Montenegro. These projects will contribute to upgrading the Western Balkans’ railway transport to TEN-T standards and ensure integration with the EU railway network. ➡ Clean energy: constructing two wind farms in Bosnia and Herzegovina and deploying a solar photovoltaic power plant in Albania. This collaboration aims to address key barriers in financial frameworks, making climate finance more accessible, affordable, and efficient, especially in emerging markets. The GCFC, hosted in Abu Dhabi, is committed to developing climate finance frameworks and championing best practices worldwide. Meanwhile, IRENA's Energy Transition Accelerator Financing Platform (ETAF), supported by significant investments from partners like the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), targets the deployment of 1.5 gigawatts of renewable power in developing countries by 2030. It highlights our unwavering dedication to accelerating private sector investments in #RenewableEnergy and #EnergyEfficiency across #Africa. 🔋💡 In 2023, SEFA approved nine projects with a combined funding of USD 72 million, expected to generate 2,840 MW of new renewable energy capacity ⚡, create approximately 1.3 million new electricity connections 🔌, reduce 8.4 million tons of CO2 emissions 🌿, and create around 160,000 new jobs 👷♂️👩🔧. A significant step in Libya’s sustainable development journey took place in early March, with the launch of an EU initiative to foster renewable energy in Libya, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German government through the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ). The initiative is designed to not only foster renewable energy but mitigate climate change in Libya.   The European Union has made a firm commitment to support Libya’s energy transition and climate resilience efforts by allocating funding to both the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the United Nations Development Programme.   UNDP Libya Resident Representative a.i., Dr. Christopher Laker, stated, "This pivotal partnership arrives at a critical juncture for Libya, as urgent action is needed to mitigate the extensive impacts of climate change. By bolstering adaptive capacities and fostering green growth and renewable energy transition, this initiative aims to safeguard every facet of Libyan life."     A high-level roundtable also took place earlier in March for Libyan stakeholders and international lenders, implemented by GIZ and co-funded by the EU.   The workshop saw the launch of a guarantee fund, through prime ministerial decree 830, which had been promised in the Libyan National Strategy for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (NSREEE) in December.   The Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) confirmed at the workshop that it had opened a bank account at the Libyan Foreign Bank (LFB) (owned by the CBL), to act as a credit fund for Real Estate foreign investors.   “These latest international and domestic initiatives are very encouraging for Libya’s renewables market. German Government and European Investment Bank (EIB) to provide €20 million to #Ukraine for implementation of renewable energy technologies At the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 UAE, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Change (BMWK), the EIB and the Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development agreed to sign a €20 million grant for the #RenewableEnergySolution Program. The grant is intended to support the development of renewable energy in Ukraine, in particular during the restoration of municipal infrastructure in communities. The integration of renewable energy has several benefits: continuity of service provision, cost savings, emission reductions, increased resilience, and reduced price volatility. The goal of this cooperation is to increase Ukraine's resilience, rebuild the country, and support communities and cities in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way, together with EU partners. The #RES program is designed to implement energy-efficient solutions in public buildings: schools, hospitals, and kindergartens. The grants will be allocated to communities and cities already receiving funding under existing #EIB framework loan agreements.
