The support of a personal trainer should not stop at physical health - the mental health of your client also needs to be considered, especially so at such a challenging time of change. 6. Empowerment Through Exercise Engaging in exercise helps mitigate menopausal symptoms, empowering women to take charge of their health. ♀️Hormone therapy (HT) may be effective at managing depressive symptoms associated with menopause, according to a recent study published in Menopause, the journal of The Menopause Society.   🙎♀️According to NPR, a significant number of women – about 18% among women in early perimenopause and 38% in late perimenopause – experience signs of depression during this transition.   ❇️The study found that 62% of the women studied at a menopause clinic had signs of depression, which may have a significant impact on their quality of life ❇️Researchers showed a beneficial effect of menopause hormone therapy (MHT) on mood symptoms during menopause when used alone and a synergistic effect when used in combination with antidepressants. MHT impacts neurotransmitter-receptor pathways involved in mood regulation. ❇️Not only do the hormone fluctuations during menopause contribute to depression, but other menopause symptoms such as poor sleep and life changes in mid-life (aging parents, kids leaving home, and career pressures) can make one more likely to be depressed. What is HRT? HRT is Hormone Replacement Therapy. It does exactly what it says on the tin - it replaces the hormones (estrogen) that women lose through menopause. There are 2 types of HRT: Estrogen only and Combined. I will go into detail about these in further posts but essentially estrogen-only HRT is used if you have had a hysterectomy. If not, then you will be prescribed progestogen to take alongside or the combined HRT. You can get body-identical or bio-identical HRT. Body-identical is regulated, can be prescribed by the NHS, and is deemed safer as it is tested, researched, and strictly regulated*. It's all over the news and social media today. But isn't this missing the point yet again???? Isn't it yet again the government and the NHS shifting their responsibilities somewhere else, instead of sorting out the primary and secondary care system and taking women's health seriously? It's all very nice to hear that employers have a responsibility of care for their employees, whatever their health situation. And I know how much reasonable adjustments can make a huge difference when facing a heath challenge of any type. BUT THIS IS MISSING THE POINT We need early intervention and prevention rather than shiny sticky plasters! 👉🏻Train GPs and primary and secondary care professionals so that they provide the RIGHT advice and treatments EARLY 👉🏻Train them so they diagnose peri and post menopause health issues quickly 👉🏻 Make access to today's body identical HRT easy and free instead of waiting until those who need it derail to support them 👉🏻 Signpost women early in life to the benefits of stress management, nutrition, physical activity, so that menopause symptoms are lessened or avoided But don't make it the sole responsibility of employers. 'Reasonable Adjustments' are nothing but fancy sticky plasters if what you need is a holistic approach to menopause with individualised care and choices on and availability of HRT, complementary medicine and therapies, and lifestyle options. For so many women, and the vast majority in my view and experience, with HRT and lifestyle adjustments, we can minimise the use and need of these shine sticky plasters and continue working with minimal impact and short term adjustments.
