Established in 2008 as a nonprofit organization, the festival is dedicated to showcasing independent cinema in the historic center of the Creative Capital of the World. DFFLA also celebrate the renaissance of downtown L.A. and its unique cultural diversity. PREMISE: As Hollywood staggers along the road towards genuine and intersectional inclusivity, the traps and complexities of engaging in authentic representation on and off-screen increasingly reveal themselves. Prominent success stories and high-profile blockbusters belie the truth that current industry studies from USC, UCLA and San Diego State University warn of a regression in industry diversity. Against this backdrop of evolving statistics, trends and conversations, there is a pressing need to critically re-examine Hollywood’s diversity landscape. Join us as we navigate the nuances, celebrate the achievements, and envision actionable strategies for a more diverse and equitable Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera.

With planning well underway for our events at Cannes Film Festival, this spring we're opening an investment round at recdek. UK tax payers get 50% on their investment back via HMRC (apologies rest of world investors #dontletthatputyouoff). At recdek, our social platform to save you from forever scrolling streamers, we believe entertainment recommendations from friends and family are so much better than algorithms. We believe in keeping you up to date with entertainment's zeitgeist. We believe in enthusiastic debate between friends. We know that scrolling Netflix for something to watch is a waste of your precious leisure time. We know there should be a better way for audiences around the world to discover shows meant for them. We have evolved enormously over the last 12 months, a whirlwind of new features going live every month: - Integration with IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. - Follow publications like The Times and The Guardian, and film festivals like BAFTA and Sundance. - Browse your friends profiles to see what they’ve been loving. - Checkout trailers, cast, directors, and rate shows. - Curate your watchlist for whatever you’re in the mood for. But our story is only just getting started. Life is often about progression and connection. So despite your LinkedIn feed’s excitement, obsession, or fear of AI, it’s unclear what its net benefit to the creative industries will be. As a filmmaker, the greatest satisfaction has not been in the cinema watching the finished film. The real thrill is in the creation, in the teamwork, in the spirit of the story we are collaborating on. The journey is the point. The community is the point. We'll continue to build our product and team, but our focus now shifts slightly: towards that community. Powerful stories make us feel, and discussing a maddening view, or eyebrow raising insight, is part of what what it is to be human. We want to facilitate that exchange of opinions. With AI making its mark, we'll soon hanker after much more than that which a computer can provide: true connection, real people, epic shared times. Last month we held an event in Austin at SXSW (massive thanks to creative collaborators AJ and Weston) and we’re now planning for Cannes in May. Through facilitating audience discussion, screenings and filmmaker's stories, recdek can become more than just a digital platform. We aim to be an eco system of recommendations, across all platforms, separate to the marketing budgets of studios, for all your entertainment needs. Dive in anytime. Add to the discussion with friends digitally, or in person. So, if you’d like to invest in the future of entertainment curation, get in touch, or free to mention us to someone that might like recdek. 50% of your cash is returned if you're a UK investor. Thanks for reading. Keep on keeping on. Ed recdek.com #investment #SEIS #recommendation #entertainment #seed #tv #film

Discover the magic of film versus digital, explore AI's creative potential with Adobe Firefly, and learn from the masterful storytelling of Denis Villeneuve.
In this weekly blog post, we look at film v digital as creative mediums within cinema, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages and why filmmakers might choose one over the other. We then turn our attention to a powerful AI tool by Adobe Firefly called ‘Text to Video’ which can help individuals bring their creative visions to life. Then finally, we take a look at the Canadian director Denis Villeneuve as he picks a favourite shot from each of his most iconic movies, breaking down how he achieved them and the thought processes behind it! Exciting updates from SORA AI as they published a short film created with their text to image AI model. The immediate question on everyone's mind: how much of it was generated by AI and how much is human input? Is the editor becoming the director? What prompts did they use? What role did the sound designer have in this project? Who wrote the script? All interesting questions in the debate about A.I. and filmmaking. Nevertheless, this interesting progress highlights numerous new opportunities for video and filmmaking, particularly for those on a budget.

This is mind-blowing 🤯. 'AIR HEAD', a short film entirely generated by AI, is impressive. I anticipated some progress in this area given the rapid deployment of various generative AI models, but certainly not at this speed and quality. According to SORA AI, the release will be 'sooner than we thought'. This innovation could fundamentally alter the way we create and consume content and information. It will democratize access, enabling individuals to unleash their creative potential without needing technical skills like editing or filming. The only limit will be our creativity. What are the implications for the media industry? But also what data is used to train the model? What will it mean for creators? Is this development good or bad? Do share your thoughts.
