Air Station near San Diego, where a cutting-edge microgrid, fueled by solar panels and landfill gas, stands ready. Its mission? To ensure resilience. It can keep the lights on for a staggering 14 days during power outages, thanks to distributed energy resources. Why the shift? Microgrids align with the military's tactical goals, from safeguarding operations to reducing emissions. They provide both backup power during blackouts and a quieter, cleaner alternative to diesel generators. Microgrids also offer economic advantages and energy diversity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They're part of the US Army's vision for a greener grid, with plans to introduce microgrids at over 130 Army bases worldwide by 2035. NEWS | CellCube selected by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for Extended Duration for Storage Installations (EDSI) Project The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy, awarded three prototype contracts for the EDSI project, one of which went to CellCube 🙌 Their megawatt-scale vanadium redox flow battery and management system will deploy integrated hardware and software to connect and balance base energy systems. Decentralized energy resiliency is enhancing the Department of Defense's (DoD) ability to sustain operations, including disaster relief and security missions. They are equipping critical facilities with advanced energy storage systems, which increases backup power capacity and uptime. South Korea has currently achieved only 1% of its 14.3GW offshore wind target for 2030. One of the key factors is the 152-meter (500-foot) height limit that the Ministry of National Defense places on offshore wind turbines, due to concerns such as potential interference with military radar systems. However, countries like the US, UK and Australia have demonstrated that governments can implement policies to ensure national security while unlocking their offshore wind potential.
