When I talk to people who are charting a career path, I sometimes get the question, “Why would I want to work for a subcontractor?” What they might not see is that the opportunities here can be so much greater — and advancement can come quickly. You won’t have to be on a two-year “development” track before you can get out in the field. And even if you aren’t lacing up boots and getting in the mud, there’s still an opportunity to influence, shape, and impact a project. In a growing organization like ours, opportunities present themselves organically to keep pace with that growth — allowing more room for people to stretch and take on new roles. We also work on the same big projects as large organizations. We can point to hotels, airports, and skyscrapers and say, “Hey, I helped build that!” We get to be part of something you can see. And the enjoyment and pride that comes with that far outweighs what you might experience somewhere else. When it comes to Baker, subcontractor doesn’t mean “less than.” It’s so much more.

Should I stay or should I go? (please feel free to hum along to The Clash as you read) As the season comes to an end many crew make the decision if they should start looking for a new position, or stay with their current programme. Every situation is different but I thought I would share some results from the recent poll (155 votes). A requirement I often get as a recruiter is, "decent longevity in previous role". With the average currently being 6-9 months, you can see this does not align with what Chief Officers and Captains are looking for. I would encourage you to commit to a programme for at least one year, then start the discussion with your Head of Department as to how you wish to progress and gain a different set of skills and experience. You would then be leaving on positive terms with a reference that more often than not, would back your decision to leave. When I track and monitor people’s careers, I look carefully at the timelines and promotions in particular. This week, I noticed a Land Graduate becoming a Senior Land Manager within 3 years. My first question as a Headhunter would be to ask how many sites have they identified and bought? Sites that have personally been managed through the acquisition process. The second question would be to take me through each step of that journey, assuming one site had been bought. I would probably ask questions about the current planning frustrations, the NPPF and the wider considerations. How many planning meetings have been attended, how did they conduct their research, what led them to creating a certain mix, rate of sale and margin. What was the sign-off process, how many bidders were they against etc. Is three years long enough to consider being a Senior Land Manager? It will be for the individual to demonstrate their skills and ability at the point of climbing the ladder further, unless being promoted internally. Have we witnessed over-promotion in other departments as a mechanism to keep staff?

My team and I were excited to head up to Oshkosh this week for the Oshkosh Placement Exchange! As a part of the candidate orientation, I was asked to serve on an employer panel; the audience was primarily job-seekers coming straight out of college or a Master's program. One of the prepared questions was "what's some advice you'd give yourself now as a first- time job-seeker?". I asked my team the question on the drive up and this is what they said: ✔ Don't get discouraged by the no's. They don't define you or your skills and abilities. ✔ Don't compare your job search to others', especially in your cohort- everyone's timelines are different. ✔ Be your authentic self in the interview ✔ Do your research and figure out how to compare salary, health insurance, and other benefits before it's time to accept an offer ✔Know your worth
