Luna Park Sydney’s chief, John Hughes, is on a mission to turn the rare art deco amusement park, visited by 1 million people a year, into Australia’s top experience destination. To do this, he’s already spent $15m on a unique, world-leading immersive experience capability and is now opening the door to creators from local musicians to major US studios to give a broader cohort of visitors reason to come and then stay longer onsite. Achieving this ambitious North Star has come with tough commercial decisions. Luna Park has bumped out punk rock bands and 40+ concerts per year. It’s pivoted away from siloed business units it wasn’t expert in, Hughes says, to elevate and diversify the core amusement park offering in a way that appeals to price conscious consumers and the desires of today’s Instagram generation. And the opportunities, he says, are exciting as a result. Today I completed 1 year working at Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. Such an amazing experience! I was able to learn a lot about the business and had the privilege to work with other experienced leaders in #technology. This was a huge cycle of accomplishments where I could impact in capital savings, improve the team productivity and satisfaction, drive strategies for product branding and portfolio management.
