1: On June 20, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a case called Atkins v. Virginia that imposing the death penalty on defendants with intellectual disabilities is a violation of the cruel and unusual punishment clause of the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. 2: On June 20, 1992, the South American nation of Paraguay adopted a new constitution that ended the country's long era of military rule that was commenced by Alfredo Stroessner in the 1950s. 3: On June 20, 1837, British monarch, King William IV, died on the throne — and thus began the reign of Queen Victoria. William IV ruled Britain from 1830 to 1837. Victoria's reign lasted from 1837 until her death on January 22, 1901. Queen Victoria’s reign is the second longest in British royal history (Queen Elizabeth II's reign is currently the longest), and it was an era of political, social, and economic dominance across the globe for the United Kingdom. The Victorian era saw an unprecedented rise in the global influence of Britain, though many times at the cost of the livelihoods of millions across the globe. Queen Victoria was the last monarch from the House of Hanover (Hanoverian dynasty) that ruled the United Kingdom from 1714 to 1901. A total of six monarchs ruled the United Kingdom during the Hanoverian dynasty. The Hanoverian dynasty was succeeded by the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed in 1917 as the House of Windsor, which is the current ruling family in the United Kingdom. 4: On June 20, 1789, the deputies of the Third Estate in France met at a tennis court and took an oath pledging not to separate until a written constitution had been established for France. That meeting is known as the Tennis Court Oath in French history, and the meeting was held at the tennis court because the deputies were locked out of their meeting hall at Versailles Palace on that day. The Tennis Court Oath was one of the many events of the French Revolution, which began in May of 1789 and ended in November of 1799. #history #worldhistory #globalevents #ushistory #europe #britain #unitedkingdom #france #americanhistory #northamerica #southamerica #paraguay
