Last week, Greece became the 16th country in the European Union, the 21st country in Europe and the 37th country in the world to legislate marriage equality for same-sex union, as well as automatic parental rights for same-sex couples. This is a huge win for the Greek LGBTQ+ community, as it safeguards the future of same-sex families. Whilst we must celebrate the success stories, we cannot overlook the fact that there is still work to be done. There are 27 countries in the EU, which means 41% of EU countries still do not legally recognise same-sex union. Whilst the EU's treaties and law ensure same-sex activity is legal in all EU member states and discrimination in employment is prohibited, EU states have different laws when it comes to any greater protection, same-sex civil union, same-sex marriage, and adoption by same-sex couples.
