What does it take to get a world-class โญ, globally deployable product out the door in the telecom ๐ถ industry? In the case of Ericsson's 5G Dual-mode Packet Core, it took years of planning, thinking and doing behind the scenes. Enlightening to read ๐and exciting to share a detailed account of the key steps our product and technology teams undertook to make it all happen. Personal connection: During 2018-2022, as we in the field, worked to understand our customers' emerging needs for their combined 5G/4G packet cores, drove pre-sales in wave 1 of the 5G adoption, and then led integration and rollout of these technology components into our customer environments, we were sweating :) .. and sweating hard. However, in the background of our minds, we knew that our central teams had our backs and so it would all be worth it in the end. We knew that our product and development teams for Packet Core had laid the groundwork and I am thrilled to see it come to fruition. Reading about it makes me further realize how well orchestrated all this was. Vodafone, Cirrus360, and Intel Corporation are advocating adoption of the RAN Domain-Specific Language (RDSL) across the Open RAN community. RDSL is developed to provide mobile operators with a speedier and more cost-effective way to fine tune software to sync with silicon ships and other hardware that constitute an Open RAN mobile site. The code was started through the collaboration sponsorship of the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) and is developed to adopt a dynamic, machine learning (ML) approach to abstractionโi.e., the hardware and software interface. Today, new software is typically optimized over time; RDSL code can enable the abstraction to learn patterns and optimize data movements proactively and more rapidly. I believe the trioโs backing of the RDSL initiative provides impetus to Vodafoneโs commitment in executing the first viable commercial deployment of Open RAN in Europe, seeding more large-scale Open RAN deployment across Europe. Strategically, the national governments of the EU and the European Commission have championed industrial and political policies to seed Open RAN with the goal of achieving key objectives such as broader supply chain stability, boosts in domestic employment, and enhanced national security. Vodafone, Cirrus360, and Intelโs backing of RDSL can help accelerate the fulfillment of such strategic goals. Hello, there is a huge move of the dial for RAN modernization and flexibility of a partner ecosystem! Across Wales and Southwest England, Vodafoneโs deployment of #OpenRAN is underway across 2,500 locations. While the focus is on installing OpenRAN technologies, Vodafone is also working to remove all High-Risk Vendor (HRV) technology from the Radio Access Network.ย ย ย Over the last few years, Vodafone has worked with us to trial OpenRAN. Together with Vodafone, Capgemini- we have validated the technology in lab trials and then installed it in rural locations. The overall objective is to test the resiliency and reliability of this technology.ย ย OpenRAN is a crucial part of Vodafoneโs network strategy, which allows alternative suppliers to enter the market while enhancing Vodafoneโs own supply chain resilience.
