As we celebrate our nation’s Declaration of Independence that happened 248 years ago, CONSIDER THIS: The American flag does NOT fly because it represents one political party or another. Our flag and this holiday are a reminder of founding fathers and brave soldiers who fought for our nation’s INDEPENDENCE and the FREEDOM to self-govern under GENUINE DEMOCRACY. It is a reminder for ALL races of our nation’s enduring commitment to JUSTICE, LIBERTY, and the importance of INTEGRITY (in the public eye and behind closed doors). As we navigate the complexities of these times, may we ALL choose to engage in encouraging THOUGHTFUL reflection and DIALOGUE instead of divisiveness. What is often unspoken about Memorial Day is its origins in the quest for civil rights and the search for peace. According to the Office of Veterans Affairs, it originated after a series of “Decoration Days” were organized by Black and White communities to honor fallen soldiers following the Civil War. One of the most significant of these events was held by a group of Black and White abolitionists in May 1865. In 1868, General John A. Logan, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a politically powerful organization of Union veterans, made it an official act, speaking of the practice of floral tributes and “Decoration Days” in the context of post-war Black civil rights. It was not until after WW1 that Memorial Day began to expand to honor the dead from all American wars. As we take time today to celebrate the lives of those fallen soldiers who have served this country, let us also remember that the origin of Memorial Day is rooted in the struggle to end slavery and the search for “permanent peace.
