It was such a pleasure for Reworld Waste to host Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages from Assembly District 22 for a tour at the Hempstead facility recently. The Assemblywoman seemed delighted to get a deeper understanding of the Long Island waste process and was fascinated to witness firsthand the incredible operation of Reworld Hempstead.

Maine (the last holdout in New England) is proposing a state-wide organics program. Why is this important? Because in 2022 they landfilled approximately 60,000 tons of food waste, which released 2,000 tons of methane into the atmosphere. How much is 60,000 tons? Well if you round down a little, it's about 301 fully grown blue whales worth of material. Or if that's still too big to visualize, it's nearly 10 times as much weight as all of the remaining black rhinos in the world. Everyday is Earth Day. With that in mind, I love seeing automation put to good use with shoreline clean-ups bots like the BeBot and PixieDrone – in Wisconsin. We do need remediation solutions like this AND we also need to tackle plastic pollution by designing out waste. Imagine if instead of a variety of plastic containers we standardised a few models - offered them in glass / metal and introduced a deposit return program and system for collecting, washing, and reusing these. #plasticpollution #EarthDay #cleanups #GreatLakes

Food is the single largest contributor of materials in landfills. In many cases, that food gets tossed in packaging. In every case, that food could have been composted. In 2023, at least 35 cities across 20 states increased residential access to composting programs for food scraps, and in some cases, compostable packaging, in the United states. These new facilities are turning what would be waste into a valuable resource. 🌱
