👋 Introducing BATCOM – a start-up community composting scheme for Brimscombe and Thrupp in Stroud, Gloucestershire. This #CoopFortnight, we’re celebrating #coops like BATCOM for the altogether different way they create grassroots solutions, boost communities and meet local needs. 📍 BATCOM was set up to solve a local problem. 👨🌾 “In our area we have lots of people with gardens and allotments. But a lot of them live where the council collection lorries can’t access. So they have bonfires, compost themselves or drive their green waste to the local tip, 15 miles away,” said BATCOM co-founder Shelley Tester. 🚛 ❌ “Transporting green waste makes our carbon footprint as a local community quite big. Having a composting site here, we can create circular economy where people can bring waste that we turn into something useful and valuable for the community.” 🏚️ In its embryonic stages, BATCOM plans to redevelop an abandoned industrial estate, with composting bays due to be installed at the end of the summer. 🫶 “In the longer term, we would like to develop the site beyond composting, to include other related activities,” said Shelley. “It will bring people together. It will give them a sense of being able to do something about the climate crisis. Key Learnings and Actionable Points from AR Shivakumar's Story: 1. Comprehensive Rainwater Harvesting System: Shivakumar set up a system to collect rainwater from rooftops, storing it in tanks and recharging groundwater, making his home self-sufficient in water. 2. Greywater Recycling:Implementing greywater recycling can significantly reduce freshwater usage. Shivakumar recycles water from baths and kitchens for gardening and flushing. 3. Low-Cost Solutions:Setting up a rainwater harvesting system can be done at a nominal cost, offering a high return on investment by ensuring water availability year-round. 4. Community Education and Engagement: Educating and encouraging neighbors and communities to adopt rainwater harvesting can amplify the impact. Shivakumar's initiatives have inspired many in his locality. 5. As the monsoon season begins, it's the perfect time to start our planting journey. It begins with nurturing the saplings in the nursery, preparing them to grow strong & resilient. We like to take our time every step of the way, instead of rushing to the end. Our nurseries are located close in distance to our planting sites, to eliminate instances of damage during transportation. Most proud of this… 4 forests planted since 2020 350k Trees #selcoforests We're delighted to have further demonstrated our commitment to delivering long-term sustainable operations by creating a fourth ‘Selco Forest’ as part of our carbon-offsetting tree planting scheme. Set in Lomond Hills in Fife, the latest forest to be developed covers 21 hectares and features more than 54,000 trees. It means, over the last four years, we've planted more than 350,000 trees as part of our commitment to delivering a sustainable future for our customers and colleagues. The forest in Fife will capture 2,938 tonnes of carbon over its lifecycle, with management, thinning and harvesting of the woodland bringing an employment and economic boost to the rural sector in Fife. The tree planting project sits alongside a wide range of policies to help reduce our carbon footprint, including introducing alternative fuel vehicles to our transport fleet, a comprehensive recycling strategy, the installation of LED lighting and a new gas management system installed across the branch network. Howard Luft, Selco Chief Executive, said: “This is an exciting move forward in our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy and demonstrates our commitment to playing our part in tackling climate change. “We are fully committed to lowering our carbon footprint and the latest addition to the ‘Selco Forests’ portfolio will help further offset the carbon generated from our customer deliveries, promoting a greener future for the business.” The trees planted on the new Fife site include Sitka Spruce and Scots Pine. Once ready to harvest, it's calculated that the woodland is expected to yield roughly 7,000 tonnes of timber. We also have two forest sites in Jedburgh and one near Llandrindod Wells in Wales.
