Some ways to help with climate change and unite a community is composting. GrowNYC compost program, in collaboration with the NYC Sanitation Department, is facing budget cuts as of courtesy of Mayor Adams. Which will take effect in the new year. This decision jeopardizes our environment and community well-being. Grow NYC is collecting signatures to petition Mayor Adams to reconsider and save the compost program. 📝 Composting isn't just waste reduction; it's a powerful tool against climate change. By composting, we reduce landfill waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enrich our soil. Community compost sites foster environmental stewardship and bring neighbors together for a common cause. The consequences of cutting the compost program are dentrimental which includes Increased landfill waste, higher carbon footprints, and a missed opportunity for community bonding.

🌱 Corporate Social Responsibility in Action: Vistra and Serve the City Partnership. Once again, we joined forces with VISTRA for a community cleanup event that demonstrated the power of collaborative effort in corporate social responsibility. It was a day not only of environmental action but also of team building and community engagement. 👫 Volunteer Engagement: We were thrilled to see diverse groups of volunteers, including families, come together. The event included a fun-filled afternoon with activities like football, making it a truly family-friendly day. 🚯 Environmental Impact: The results speak for themselves - together, we collected 52.9 kg of trash, including almost 3,000 cigarette butts. With diligent sorting, over 75% of this waste will now be recycled, reducing the need for new resources and underscoring our commitment to sustainability. 🌿 Restoration Success: The cleanup not only beautified the local area of Kockelscheur but also restored it to its pristine condition, showcasing what we can achieve when we work together for a common cause. A huge thank you to all the volunteers and organizers. Your dedication to making a difference is inspiring and deeply valued. JHBG Tree LC team was awarded a $15,000 grant from the City Parks Foundation to carry out a tree stewardship and native plant program in Jackson Heights, Queens. We aspire to make our community—the most diverse in New York City— the greenest in all of New York City, for the benefit of all of its people. Though the all-volunteer JHBG Tree LC operates in only one neighborhood, it is the city's most active tree stewardship program, leading even professionally led groups operating in all five boroughs. Our focus is environmental sustainability and resilience because trees truly are Mother Nature's air conditioners. Here are some highlights of what we've done and will continue to do thanks to this grant: * We care for several hundred trees a year, targeting vulnerable recently planted trees and trees surrounded by pollinator gardens that we've planted. * We've created native pollinator gardens at two historic neighborhood buildings, our Post Office and P.S. 69 elementary. At thee latter we are in the midst of planting a native mini-woodland habitat. * Our program include environmental education, teaching volunteers who range from elementary school to seniors about the importance of recreating a piece of the natural world in Jackson Heights. Why do we do it? *Trees remove air pollution and even water pollution (by absorbing rain, less runoff reaches sewage treatment plants, which sometime become overloaded and must dump untreated sewage into local rivers and bays.) *The main goal is to use nature to ease the effects of climate change. Trees truly are Mother Nature's air conditioners. Neighborhoods with many trees are significantly cooler than those lacking them. What we are doing in Jackson Heights is now part of a larger movement across New York City. For nearly five years we've participated in what is now known as Forest For All NYC, a coalition leading the effort to increase our city's tree canopy to at least 30 percent, equitably, by 2035. The Jackson Heights Beautification Group is a nonprofit civic, environmental and arts organization, whose goal is to create the city's greenest and friendliest neighborhood for the benefit of all its people.

Weber county is excited about this pending partnership. The development of the West Weber corridor is inevitable; it's a process that's been in motion for decades. However, the county has taken a proactive stance, laying out a sustainable, comprehensive, and intelligent approach to managing this development in the Western Weber General Plan.
