I remember my last year in Uni, I was so excited to graduate, but then I started to think about the future and wonder “Well… now what?”
I had no idea what I was going to do or where to begin for my first job out of university.
As a student who didn’t have experience in the corporate world, I realized how important it was for me to network and understand all the different functions involved in a Global organization.
I joined Nestlé in 2018 in the Integrated Marketing Services department, and then I had the opportunity to recently move to a different role in the market, as an Inter Market Supply Supervisor.
I remember one of my managers suggested employees and other managers that I could connect with to learn more about what Nestlé had to offer. These one-on-one conversations grew my interest in the company and set the expectations of the company culture.
Also listening to employees’ stories about where they came from and how they got involved in Nestlé made it clear that this was a company that I wanted to pursue my career in and grow as a young professional.
I was lucky enough to have different managers who were more of mentors, who guided me by coaching and provided me with meaningful work once realizing my potential.
As I became more comfortable in both positions, my responsibilities grew.
The communication and collaboration skills I gained during this time has accelerated my learning journey.
The work I was able to be a part of has also increased my leadership awareness.
And I continue to learn every day by building new relationships and partnering with different functions.
I can tell you that everyone will have a different story and that unique experience will be up to you.
But for me, it’s always about the passion you put into your work and being excited to learn.
I put in the time, and I was eager to understand and learn.
I worked on developing myself as a leader by taking initiatives and being a problem solver.
You know now we live in a fast-paced world, and I know for a fact that those coming into the workforce have expectations that a job will be given or presented to them. Well, I too had this expectation. But the best advice I can give is that it is not magic. It takes work, experience, education, passion, and commitment.
So, just be authentic and do work that makes you excited!
And most importantly, don’t be afraid of new challenges.
I remember someone once told me that if you are not afraid and not asking questions, then the work you are doing is not challenging you and you are not developing. That sticks with me to this day, and I always live by that to better myself.
