I had to fire multiple people this past week. Here are 3 things to look out for that could help prevent this. The worst part about business is firing people you like. 1. Make sure everyone is aligned on 3 core values, which keep everyone, including yourself, in line. Ours are Competitive Greatness, Adaptability, and Conscientiousness. 2. Employees should prioritize effective internal communication with the team and external communication over anything else. 3. Everyone coming on board should want to grow in their position and industry for at least 3-5 years.

You may more than likely not like the guy because his team beat the snot out of yours for several years, if not decades. He is arguably the greatest coach of college football and his legacy will never be matched. Saban has given some incredible lessons that we can use everyday (in work and life) to be successful. We cannot allow ourselves to get caught up in the past results or future possibilities, the only thing that can affect our circumstances is what we do right now. 𝟱. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. If we want to be successful it’s our responsibly to take the time to study and create a detailed plan that gives us the best chance to win. I delivered my year-end reviews with my team last week, and I've always found it a little challenging to have a discussion on last year's results when we are almost three months into the new year. One thing I've started including in my reviews is the phrase, "I would love to see *employee* continue to work on *opportunity* to further help with their *development goal* "   This struck me in the middle of a conversation last week- as I was delivering this review, I realized the employee had already been addressing that opportunity and was already excelling in that area this year! It is one thing to write a review, but it's another to put it into action. By providing consistent feedback, empowerment, and engagement to my team on their areas of opportunity, they will accomplish what we set out for them- but there has to be equal buy in from both parties, and constant communication in order to really feel the progress on what's important to them AND us.   My goal with every development conversation is to leave the conversation with an action plan to build on. By continuing to hold ourselves accountable, we make all the difference in our team's career goals, and those Year End Reviews become celebrations of accomplishments!
