In 2021 I made $115,000 as a creator, which put me in the top 16% of creators (according to the ConvertKit creator economy report). But it was barely enough as the sole income earner of a family of 4. After taxes and healthcare, I even had to dip into savings to buy Christmas presents that year. I don’t think many creators realize that you could make well over $100K and it still not be enough to make ends meet if that’s your only income. I made WAY MORE money in 2020 on my W-2 plus creator income that was a side hustle at the time. If there’s one piece of advice to give to creators who are looking to make it their full-time focus — run your numbers and make sure you can make do with less than you expect for at least 1-2 years. Disclaimer: every person situation is unique and different. Not everyone has kids and are a single income family. I will also say that we probably spend more than the average family on food. Our housing is 22% of post-tax and post-tithe income. No car payments. Ballin’ on a budget and believing in the vision.

There are entire businesses built out of tiktok accounts of people sharing their hellish-life-experiences as AirBNB hosts through their property investment strategy. AKA the 21st century's "get rich quick scheme." It's an identity group of faux-preneurs. There are more people who are categorized as "property investment coaches" than as actual property investors... Think about that for a minute. But their experiences are miserable. Dealing with guests that are a nightmare every day. And people still think property investment, renting, and passive income is a way to prosperity. The best case scenario is and remains: you live your life as the worst possible person in society - a rent seeker. And you make some money, as a rent seeker. You spend your days dealing with the worst version of a statistically significant percentage of people, every day, as you deal with rental issues. And your main job is customer service rep and house cleaner. A crash in the housing market keeps you up at night. Note: I work with a few property investors. Real ones. People who work in the 9-10 figures of investment. They do exist. It's a real expertise.

Back in my fundraising days, one of the less ageist questions I would be commonly asked was whether I had a backup fund when the money would (inevitably) run out—investors like knowing that the money will be put towards the business and not on fat salaries. They were encouraged when I told them I rented a room out on Airbnb, which provided me with passive revenue and allowed me to focus on growing my business and not trying to hold down a part-time or full-time job simultaneously. This morning, I was reminded, when checking on the new Airbnb interface, that it has been 9 years since I first became a host. When I mentor Startup School for Seniors participants, I ask them how much money they want to make because most are not interested in creating a fast-scaling tech startup but a business they can manage alongside their other responsibilities. For many it's £500-£1000 extra/month. Despite all the hype about dropshipping or affiliate programmes as a way to generate a quick buck, the easiest way is to rent out a spare room if you have one. Yes, you may have to forego some degree of privacy and need to clean more frequently than usual. However, if you want a passive income and live in London, taking in a lodger or listing on Airbnb is the way to go. The only inconvenience on my part is that I change sheets often. I could earn significantly more, but because I don't want to deal with providing breakfast or allowing access to my kitchen, I keep the price absurdly low for a Zone 2 very nice London flat. And it's booked up most days of the year. Like other marketplace businesses (eBay, Etsy, etc.), the more reviews you have, the easier it becomes to sell and the higher you rank in the search engine. So, it does help that I have over 550 reviews. This one’s all about money, money, money. 💰 Last year, FRQNCY Media faced significant challenges due to economic shifts. It was a wake-up call for me personally. As CEO and executive producer, I realized that I wasn't just an executive, I was also a content creator at heart. I wanted to reconnect with that side of myself, both for creative fulfillment and as a strategy to diversify my income streams. I began exploring new avenues to build my online presence, aligning with my values and interests. I started posting more to TikTok (it’s hella uncomfortable at first), and ended up going viral 4 times 🤯 That allowed me to join the TikTok Creator Rewards Program, which pays me per 1,000 qualified views. It’s been a challenging journey with some major scores and super duds along the way. I’ll share more about that journey in other posts, but overall it’s been such a fun and refreshing change from the operational duties I face daily at FRQNCY. Building on this momentum, I developed a content strategy to monetize on YouTube. I’m still working on rolling that out, and excited to experiment more as an individual instead of as a prodco. As many of you know, I also started offering private consulting sessions. Drawing on my 16+ years of experience in corporate America, entrepreneurship, and media, I knew I had a wide breadth of wisdom to offer and wanted to remove the barrier of access (previously we could only work together on a big-budget production). Now I get to offer personalized advice to creators, podcasters, leaders, and growing entrepreneurs, helping them navigate challenges and achieve their goals. But, y’all, that’s not where my income experimentation ends. Earlier this year, I tried my hand at selling digital downloadable art on Etsy—a creative outlet that gave me an artistic outlet. I’ve spent the least amount of time on this stream so it hasn’t led to much. I’ll be giving it more of my attention in August. Diversifying my personal income streams beyond FRQNCY isn’t just about financial stability; it’s about embracing the fact that I’m a multifaceted person. It’s about finally recognizing that doing too much of one thing doesn’t allow me to fully express myself creatively. Here’s hoping that alignment pays off. I’ll share that with you at the end of the year in case it’s helpful. And remember that more platforms are starting to share the wealth with creators, including YouTube, TikTok, and now even Facebook.
