Just watched this case study play at #ControlsCon24 by Cochrane Supply & Engineering. #NiagaraCommunity accelerating innovation is a big theme here.

An interesting panel discussion yesterday hosted by Insider Media. With development in Bristol being so expensive the panel discussed how we balance the need for affordable housing without losing sight of the other important issues, such as the environment, and still ensure good place-making and quality for future generations. As pointed out by Nick Sturge MBE, Bristol has a huge pool of talent which needs to be supported with better infrastructure, versatile commercial space and homes located to support growing sectors, such as our diverse Tech sector. But it's not just about homes, there is still a huge demand for Cat A office space, and David North spoke about the difference it has made to the Osborne Clarke team moving to a better quality office both from a well-being perspective and with office attendance. Finally, Richard Bonner asked that we all continue to support the idea for a rapid transport system, which is a key solution to many of Bristol's challenges although still a long way off - unbelievably Bristol is the only core city in the UK without one! Investment is crucial for Bristol to achieve its future aspirations. Examples such as Bristol Temple Quarter are paving the way to a built environment that is hopefully greener, more inclusive and showcases our unique City for generations to come. #Bristol #Buildingforthefuture

Great Op Ed by Christopher VerPlanck on the importance of historic preservation! UNESCO's Historic Urban Landscape Recommendation offers further guidance on how to safeguard "Urban heritage, including its tangible and intangible components, [which] constitutes a key resource in enhancing the liveability of urban areas, and fosters economic development and social cohesion in a changing global environment. Taxes collected per acre is one of the most important metrics that Cities should be incorporating into their zoning policies. Too often, higher density communities with blacker / browner populations are forced to subsidize the lower density, higher resource disproportionately white communities. Similarly, productive main streets in historic downtowns often subsidize the big box chains on the periphery. Grateful for the work of Strong Towns and Urban3 shining light on these issues.

Learning more about which development patterns increase wealth in a Place is a very provocative course of study. Especially as we face multiple crises in society, which in their overlap the academics are calling a polycrises. Providing revenue generating patterns to inspire future real estate asset creation is important to municipalities capability to sustain and improve its infrastructure, (physical [e.g. transportation, utilities, public buildings], and social institutions [e.g. sanitation, disease mgmt. & healthcare, policing, education prgms. & schools, life mgmt. support services]) How we choose to settle on the land, where we dwell, is not only an important philosophical and political discussion to have, it is also sociologic and economic. Moreover, it is not a zero sum game of ideological posturing. It is an opportunity to mix and blend, weave integrally, the old with the new, the newer with the older, and do it this way and that way, or that way and this way, by using some of these and some of those, all deserving and put together with good design methods into a rich tapestry of who we were, who we are, and who we want to become in the communities in which we choose to live. Architecture, city planning, municipal management, urban design, community development, and economic development arenas are all on point. They need to form systemic coordinated inter-organizational networks (SCION) to best deliver equitable and ecosystem sustainable Places. Coming together by way of combining resources in Place-making's two aspects: a. Infrastructure with excelllent buildings, landscapes, and good gathering spaces (the place) that supports a "sense of place"; b. Social connectors (the people) activities for building the bonding, bridging, and linking social capital that supports a "sense of community" and brings hope to the future in places we inhabit, with the value creation of real estate development, we will improve the potential for posterity to produce prosperity in perpetuity. It's an imperfect world, but working across disciplines we can collaborate to move the needle in the place-making, community-building, world in a positive direction toward creating more perfect poleis. Why? Because place matters. It matters more if it's affordable, sustainable, and financially self sufficient. It matters more if we envision it as we want; not have it dictated by out of date technocratically established rules. We need better rules for the game of making our Places. Time is soon in which we should converge all the good work being done in the many divergent silos into SCIONs to stimulate innovation and customizably deliver purposeful programs to make our versions of poleis, (metropoleis and micropoleis), the best American places they can be.

There is significant potential for development in the North West – with Wigan, Bolton and Oldham among the areas with the largest amount of ‘Grey Belt’ land in the country. Much has been made of the Grey Belt’s capacity to help address the housing crisis by providing space for much-needed new homes and building communities. The ‘Grey Belt’ also contains land well suited to building commercial and employment spaces that will create local jobs and support the long-term growth of these communities. In our region, industries like life sciences and advanced manufacturing can help turn the North West into an internationally-competitive powerhouse. With investment into these sectors, infrastructure to support new development, and ambition from both the private and public sectors, there is a big opportunity. We need a joined-up approach to development that does not neglect residential or industrial objectives at the expense of the other. Sustainable growth requires both.
