I am so underwhelmed by Instagram broadcast channels. 🤨 So last week, IG's broadcast channels feature made it to the UK, and there was a barrage of invites from creators as they all tried to figure out what it is and how to use it best. Similar to how Threads had a massive pickup in its first week. I joined a few, but I found the experience so lonely for the creator and very stunted for the audience. As a fan, I felt muted because the audience can only react with emojis and vote in polls. Clubhouse made me feel the same way, and I dropped out instantly. I don't understand how the broadcast channel should make me feel closer to the creator if I can't really interact with them. What's different to this than liking a feed post? At least, I can comment on a feed post and get a heart from the creator, which feels more validating. As for the creator, several of them mentioned in the broadcast channels themselves that they wished people could write back. One creator gave up at the end of the first 24 hours and said "Guys, just DM me instead so we can actually talk." One week in, my takeaway is that broadcast channels are brilliant for traditional celebs and musicians but very lacking for digital creators who thrive on deeper engagements. In an era where fans are looking for closer access, this isn't the answer. But what's your experience? Maybe I'm a minority!

Instagram Broadcast Channels - Are you using them yet? 🤔 A little round-up to get you started 👇 1: First of all, it’s important you make sure your first message outlines the perks or benefits followers can expect by joining your channel. This way, you'll not only get them to join but also set the stage for the value you'll be providing from there. 2: Use it to learn about your audience and use polls to gauge interest in potential new services or future artist bookings. For example, if you're considering which DJ will convert to ticket sales, simply run a poll and see if your preferred artist stands. Adding a menu item?... Ask your followers which they prefer. 3: Grow your Instagram audience by using the channel to showcase behind-the-scenes content, special offers, or exclusive previews of upcoming events to encourage people to join. You have to be a follower to join the channel, so this is the time to grow. Remember, keep it exclusive - don’t be tempted to follow up elsewhere! 4: Creators can invite other creators to participate in their broadcast channel. Why not interview an upcoming artist who is playing at your event or give a fan the opportunity to join in on the conversation by running a competition outside of the app, which in turn will grow your channel 🤷♀️ ___ How To Expand Your Audience? Followers will receive a one-time notification to join your channel, and then it’s over to you… One way you can promote your Broadcast Channel is by using the ‘join channel’ sticker in your Stories to remind existing and new followers of your channel. From there, you can link in with your usual newsletter and social media strategy over time to keep the momentum going. I've been thinking a lot about TikTok lately with the news cycle, and found this in Socialinsider's A Glitch In The Metrics email today.   Basically, the argument is that TikTok isn't social media - it's a television/search hybrid model. From Social Insider's Miruna Vocheci:   "In television programming, "flow" is how channels and networks try to hold their audience from program to program or from one segment of a program to another.    Raymond William, a well-known media theoretician, states that flow is “the defining characteristic of broadcasting, simultaneously as a technology and as a cultural form.”   So, this article follows the logical structure of his work, considering the nature of the flow, and metaphorically asks a hypothesis: What if TikTok is not social media at all? What if TikTok is television?  (It’s also a new Google; I can’t keep up 😩)   Just like flipping through TV channels with a remote control, users scroll through TikTok's endless stream of videos, and users don't have complete control over what they see next.   The only difference is TikTok enhances this experience by delivering content that is more relevant and personalized to each user."   To extend the argument - what about the Reels feed on Instagram? New update from Instagram overnight - Instagram Broadcast Channels are officially available in the UK. 👋 If, like me you woke up to a number of invitations to join different creator's Broadcast Channels, you aren't alone. Instagram has been gradually rolling this new feature out throughout 2023, but officially made it available in the UK just last night. But what is a Broadcast Channel? Essentially, it is a way for creators to message people in their Broadcast Channel, a bit like a large DM group but one that only the creator can message in. Members can react to messages, but cannot reply. Types of content creators can share in these Broadcast Channels include typed messages ✍ , voice notes 🎙, and videos 📹 , giving members of the groups access to exclusive content. Help or hinderance? Initial feedback has seen many annoyed, even within the first 24 hours to the constant notifications received from Broadcast Channels. And to be honest, although I have joined a couple Broadcast Channels to see what all the fuss is about, I get it! The annoyance is real.
