New product: Castello Collection KKK Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates - Available at MBSDpipes.com Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’ This might just be the nicest smooth finish Castello I’ve ever held. It’s a Collection, so it’s one of Castello’s highest standard grades, but the straight grain patterns are so tight and evenly distributed around its bowl that I’m surprised the stummel didn’t end up as an Aristocratica. As an extra distinction, this Castello includes a bare plateau rim, which I’m normally only used to seeing on Great Line freehands, if on Castello pipes at all. Judging by the shape code in the “castle” stamp, this pipe was made in 1991, while Carlo Scotti was still head of the Castello workshop. It’s a 3 (out of a possible 4) “K” grade Collection, and the “N” stamp indicates that the pipe was originally sold at Milan’s Noli Pipe tobacconist. The condition is great. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’ The Sea Rock Briar is possibly the most iconic finish in all of modern Italian pipes. It is one that has been coveted and indeed emulated since its inception in the late 1940s. This particular Sea Rock dates from sometime between the end of the 1960s and 1982, as evinced by its uppercase ‘K’ size nomenclature and was an American import, as evinced by its rhinestone (rather than a white bar) stem inlay. This Sea Rock also comes to us through our trade-in program from a particularly careful collector of Italian high-grades. The condition is, understandably, great, and the pipe has also been preserved with its original box and sleeve. There’s a little bit of darkening and finish fading on the rim, but as it is a Sea Rock, this is only visible on very close inspection. New product: Castello Trademark KKKK 75 Smooth Lovat Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’ The “75” is Castello’s interpretation of the traditional Lovat shape, though as with all of the workshop’s shapes, their version is quite distinct. It’s somewhere between a stack, a Lovat, a lumberman, and a saddle billiard, and it’s also changed a little over the years. This iteration, from somewhere between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1980s (hence the “K” grading), leans more toward the saddle billiard, albeit with a more formidable length than usual. The pipe’s tall bowl also allows it to show of brilliant bird’s-eye patterns on either side of its bowl, joined by cross-grain at its aft and fore. The condition is very good. There’s some finish fading on the rim, and a little tooth chatter on the stem, but these are minor, cosmetic imperfections. New product: Savinelli Capri Root Briar 9004, pre-1970s, Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist. Savinelli’s Capri series were some of the earliest pipes offered by the make, and have been in and out of production throughout the make’s lifetime, though they were last made at least a decade ago. They feature the quintessentially Italian, pebble-dash rustication motif found across the nation’s great makes – Castello’s Sea Rock, Caminetto’s Business, Radice’s Rind, and so on. This Capri Root Briar wears a dark brown, near-black stain over its rocky stummel, and is rendered in what is today known as the “904KS” shape. Why is this one a “9004” and not a 904KS? Because it was made prior to the 1970s, when Savinelli moved to a three-digit numbering system. This should prick the ears of collectors, as should the vulcanite stem, which is rarely used on modern Savinellis, and the pipe’s original inner tube, highly reminiscent of the one made famous by Dunhill. The condition is great. New product: Ardor Urano Rusticated Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own. Like most of the great Italian workshops, Ardor has their own rustication style under the name, ‘Urano,’ which is the Italian form of the English, ‘Uranus.’ Most of Ardor’s lines are named after celestial bodies, in fact, such as the Venere (Venus), Giove (Juputer), and Meteora (meteor). The Urano could be considered Ardor’s answer to Castello’s Sea Rock, though I find the former to be more rugged and rustic than the latter. This Urano is a large Canadian shape, cutting an imposing figure with its size and stony appearance. Its thick walls should be able to handle just about any blend you throw at it, and its flattened base will allow for it to be set down from time to time during longer smokes. The condition is excellent. While a great width is characteristic of the basic form, this Ardor squat bulldog is even wider than most. In addition to being singularly assertive in form, the pipe also has a wider chamber is typical, guaranteeing that it will smoke ribbon cuts and mixtures like a dream. The condition is excellent. The pipe has been smoked, but a handful of times at most. New product: Gigi Elegance Chubby Straight Billiard Estate Briar Pipe Unsmoked 9mm, Horn Stem Gigi pipes occupy an interesting position in the history of Italian pipe-making. The story begins with the founding of Sociedade Rovera, a pipe-making company in Varese, Italy, by the Rovera family. As members of the Rovera family left to start their own ventures, the dynasty associated with the name would be split into several companies; Angelo Rovera created Ardor with his son Dorelio; Federico created Fe.Ro; Massimilliano created Mario Rovera; Fiorenzo created Gardenesa; and Giorgio created Giorgio Rovera, along with partners Angelo and Adele Bianchi. In 1964, Luigi Crugnola, nephew of the Bianchis, took over the Giorgio Rovera make and changed its name to his own – Gigi. This is the first Elegance I’ve seen from Italian make Gigi, and I have to say I’m quite impressed. This one is a distinctly stout, chubby billiard, a shape that is sometimes referred to as a ‘Maigret.’ Unlike most Maigrets that I’ve encountered, this one appears to have a stem made from genuine horn – either that, or a remarkably good imitation. Given the pipe’s distinctly thick walls, it should be able to handle just about any blend thrown at it, too. The pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl-coating to help ease in its first smokes. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters, though it should accommodate some variety of adapter if non-filtered use is preferred.
