You know my feelings on this: using AI in technical interviews is NOT cheating. It’s the future of the developer job. That said, here are three red flags that should give you pause when you see them in a candidate’s work or : 🚩The candidate says they don’t use AI -- yet there is no question their resume and cover letter were generated by Copilot or ChatGPT. Why? Using AI isn’t a problem – but dishonesty is. (Ask them about it with an open mind – you could also be making an assumption!). 🚩There’s no customization or “human thoughtfulness” evident in the candidate’s submissions. AI is a useful starting point to save time or to get unstuck – but relying on it without reviewing it screams of laziness. 🚩There are errors or incorrect assumptions in the code. A commitment to quality requires diligence in the details. When using AI resumes (in their current form), pay attention to these 3 stylistic tendencies: 1. ChatGPT AI-generated resumes heavily rely on placing gerunds mid-sentence, giving these bullets an almost awkward sentence phrasing sequence. 2. The word sequence ordering of AI-generated resume bullets prioritize hiding the value metrics at the end of the sentences instead of the front. 3. The most popular LLMs used also add a bunch of unnecessary clutter words in the sentences, depriving bullets of concise clarity. Fluff > substance. Also, always remember that the inputs beget the outputs. If you’re missing key achievements in the draft you provide, AI cannot interview you to get them out, so they’ll never make it into the final copy - it only knows what you’ve written/told it. Make sure your inputs are thorough.
