Our #Members have spoken: in 2024, OnBoard can best serve our community by offering more opportunities for Members to connect and engage with one another, investing in the pipeline of board-ready women earlier in their careers, and seeking out more open board roles. It takes resources to deliver on these new programming initiatives. As you consider your #yearendgiving, we invite you to make a tax-deductible donation to fuel the work that makes women on boards a reality: 20 donations of $500 will equip OnBoard to continue building out our career lifecycle initiatives, which help early, mid, and advanced-career women vision pathways to board service. 10 donations of $1,000 will defray the cost of introducing new membership offerings, including #Mentor Programs at all membership levels and a Buddy Program for new Members. It’s not news, but this is a good reminder for charity leaders (and all leaders actually). If you’re really committed to diversity and inclusion, it has to be a through line in your organisation. That includes the board. Yes, it’s ‘harder’ to recruit this way - but it’s harder because it’s not a social norm for a wide range of people to be trustees, there are structural barriers in place, and some recruiters act as if they’re helpless in the face of the challenge. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive, but you do need to commit and not give in at the first hurdle. Change comes when you make a change. (I might have to put that on a T-shirt). If you have a recruitment policy that sets out how you encourage diversity of experience and perspective, apply it in your trustee recruitment. If you don’t - write one or get some help (and hey, I bet there are some brilliant members of Fair Collective who could help you!).

Check out Candid's "The state of diversity in the U.S. nonprofit sector" report that analyzes the demographic data of 59,550 public charities. Among its key findings - which comes as no surprise - is that the U.S. nonprofit sector becomes less diverse at higher levels of leadership and that white male CEO representation increases with organization size, while BIPOC female CEO representation decreases. Moreover, compared to the U.S. adult population, white CEOs are overrepresented— especially in states with racially diverse populations. #Nonprofits #Diversity #Representation #DiversityEquityInclusion #DEI #Leadership

Nothing new to note. Just a quick reminder. We can't make a change without broader: • Representation. • Perspectives. Escaping groupthink is impossible, when 92% of trustees are white, older, and have above-average income and education (Taken on Trust, Charity Commission 2017). Keen to attract more diverse trustees? Make 5 simple adjustments to your hiring process: 👉 Actively encourage applications from under-represented groups. 👉 Keep it anonymised. 👉 Look beyond your usual network. 👉 Invite a diverse interview panel (use external panellists if necessary). 👉 Pay interview expenses. Board diversification takes time. That's OK. But for more informed decision-making, your board needs to be open - safe - for a variety of lived experiences. P.S.
