Today at 2 PM I'm attending the first virtual session for 2024 of HealthIMPACT Live virtual. At 3:50 PM ET the latest episode of "5 Good Things" with Megan Antonelli will air. I am thrilled to share good things- here are SOME (but not all) of the things I am going to talk about. 1. I shared some of the news that Erin Brodwin from Axios reported about Rune Labs and their Parkinson's development. https://lnkd.in/d3puu2DD First of all she's a great reporter and I'm secretly planning to invite her to interview people with HealthIMPACT Live (you heard it here first). Secondly one of my grandfathers died of Parkinson's and I'm thrilled that there are people working to improve things. 2. CMS has a chief competition officer. Stacy Sanders has been appointed to work on lowering healthcare and prescription drug costs and coordination with the FTC and DOJ to discuss anticompetitive healthcare technology data practices. I would love to discuss that more- I've seen companies with questionable data ethics about AI development for healthcare- and I think if you are appointed to do this work you must be a MASTER of balance. My dear trial-matching-companies- (and anyone who still likes to believe that the issues with trial recruitment lie in the *matching* 🙄 ) Lately, we in MPNEurope have been getting some more of that again and as #Melanoma community, we *know* what it is like to rely on clinical trials to survive, so here some pointers to keep future exchanges constructive. 1. if your life is at stake, the last thing you want to be is on a clinical trial. In the best scenario, trials cost time (that you'd rather spend with your family) and money (that you might not have). In the worst, you end up on treatment that you don't want (and still invest time and money for THAT) and additional invasive treatments. Besides, you want something that *works*. 2. You'll obviously say you care about Science and all that- but honestly- that pay-walled publication and ESMO/ ASCO presentation- you're likely going to be dead by that time anyway- but as your onc cares, you obviously say yes (can't afford to upset the person you depend on for your care) but if you REALLY talk to people- people care about seeing their kids grow up, about growing old with the love of their lives. Not about someone else's papers. 3. Rubbish in, rubbish out. Shiny user-friendly mask aside...you still pull your data from clinicaltrials.gov.... 4. Your business model matters. You want my grandmother's shoe size to even search for a some (clinicaltrials.gov pulled) trial- you are just profiling people (to sell the data no less). How much do you get per trial referral and how does that affect the ranking of your trial propositions? Honestly, we don't need yet another pseudo-patient-friendly surface pulling data from https://lnkd.in/gtBd23MH with some dodgy underlying business model with some lofty claims to scientific relevance and it can have AI thrown into it 200 times over. What we WOULD need were services that would tell a patient 'this trial due to the drug (REF REF REF) and its design (no blinding, on randomisation to dodgy stuff, no other crop-outs) will increase your chances of survival by y' and we don't make money on just profiling you and our search algorithms aren't influenced by commissions or other non-scientific tweakery'. Now THAT would be worth talking about.

A thought provoking post from fellow patient advocate. Do read the exchange of comments, which I think highlight some of the current issues in #clinicaltrial and drug development processes. We need to address the fears and concerns on both 'sides', #pharma and #patientadvocates. We need it to change the current broken model: the waste of £, time, energy, resources, and lives!!! We need that shift in mentalities, and work on having real respect for the expertise of patient groups, whilst looking at the needs of pharma. It is actually compatible, as the desired outcome is the same: get more drugs to market. The healthcare systems cannot sustain inefficient drugs, drugs with uncertain efficacy or drugs that won't address unmet needs. These will not be paid for. Therefore those investing in pharma ought to check carefully at how these funds are used. At the current rate, 80% of trials will still fail.
