In May 2023, SFU MOT MBA professionals Greg Hatton, P.Eng, Pankaj Bagga, and Juan Luis Latapi Artigas teamed up with Harbour Air Seaplanes to explore the possibilities of ePlanes, market potential, regulations, and strategies. Harbour Air's ePlane project, initiated in 2019 and has undergone over 70 test flights, was in the process of seeking regulatory approval from Transport Canada. Leveraging an average industry experience of more than 15 years, the students conducted a thorough evaluation of the electric aviation sector. This encompassed various aspects such as market dynamics, competition, technological innovations, and potential challenges. With diverse expertise across domains such as aerospace, venture capital, software development, and robotics, the students crafted strategic proposals to help Harbour Air through the evolving ePlane landscape. Guided by associate professor Carlos da Costa, PhD, FCIM from the Beedie School of Business, the initiative concluded with a presentation in July 2023, highlighting the potential of academic-industry partnerships in shaping a sustainable future for electric aviation. Reflecting on this achievement, da Costa emphasized the fundamental commitment of the MOT MBA program to equip students with the skills to tackle complex business and technology challenges in cutting-edge industries. As my iPQ’s research comes to a close, I'm excited to share the valuable lessons I've learned. Through this experience, I've gained an array of research and analysis skills, while also discovering how to avoid different biases. I have learned different time management skills such as using a Gantt chart and effective project management. During my research, I was surprised to discover the incredible technological advancements made in the world of Formula 1 since its establishment in 1950. It's truly staggering to see how far the sport has come. Last week I had the pleasure to learn a lot from students for my work. I have been part of the MAN Truck & Bus SE Team at the Formula Student Germany 2023. Here are my lessons learned: 1. Endurance is bigger than short-term success Ecurie Aix - Formula Student Team RWTH Aachen e.V. has started in this competition "not as expected". But they stayed focused. Put everything into their car to be successful in the end. Results? First place overall in "Formula Student Electric" The title goes to stamina. (And to one of our sponsored teams.) Whoop! Whoop! 2. Global support brings you to the top Never ever did I experience an attitude, an atmosphere like at the FSG: Everyone has supported everybody. Formula Student Team Delft even brought a complete workshop which could be used by all teams. All knew what the others have suffered to be there. At the end all should be able to race! All teams did benefit from this principle. Also the winners. Amazing. 3. Passion & willingness can lift you higher than money & equipment I have talked to many students from different teams and countries. There are some with money and some without. To even this unbalance it appeared to me some teams have spent even more emotions and time than other. Because they wanted to be successful. So damn much. And suddenly you win the competition against "the whole world". Right, UniNa Corse - Squadra Corse Federico II? 4. Your skills matter, not where you come from (mostly) "Wow, there are even teams from India, Taiwan and Canada!" All teams had to meet the same requirements. It has been crucial that every squad comprehended all required skills to achieve the goal: A competitive car. Nobody cared who the skilled student came from. Fantastic. But to be fair: The team from Shanghai was waiting for its car until saturday. Damn customs authority. 5. It is all for nothing without fun Laughter. Positivity. Curiosity. Joking. And after work parties. No insomnia, no broken part, no hesitation, no heat and no defeat could stop the students from having fun. I am sure without fun they could not have gone through with this competition. And they did not want to as well. Impressive. And remarkable. Thank you for these learnings! I want to be a race car driver!  No, not really, but I'm sharing a great article from SAE International (Society of Automobile Engineers) about one of my favorite clients, Kevin Boehm Racing.
