In 2011, I embarked on a journey to find my true calling amidst the beauty of the great outdoors. Leaving behind the familiar, I ventured to Wales for a fast-track instructor course, braving the cold for four exhilarating winter months. Some might say it was a leap of faith.
Returning to Harrogate full of passion but lacking experience, I found my footing at the Harrogate Climbing Centre, initially as a volunteer. It was a playground of learning, evolving into a paid instructor role and eventually, a duty manager position. Along the way, fate introduced me to my now partner in crime, Dan Miller who was also a duty manager at the time.
Our shared love for adventure propelled us to the Austrian Mountains for a winter climbing trip, planting the seed for what would become Live For Today.
Fast forward 12 years, and we’ve now returned full circle by acquiring the very wall where it all started.
The past six months have been a whirlwind of challenges and triumphs. From negotiating prices to navigating funding sources and legal intricacies, every obstacle has tested me to my almost limit. Amidst the hustle, there's an undeniable thrill as we welcome new team members and set our sights on propelling this business to new heights.
As the saying goes, nothing worthwhile comes easy. But each hurdle cleared has only strengthened our entrepreneurial spirit. Embracing calculated risks over random chances, we've learned invaluable lessons along the way. Who knew that when Alex Cooper says she has the ”HOTs" for you it doesn’t mean she wants to go for a drink! 😂
Our latest venture aligns seamlessly with our vision—to firmly establish Live For Today as a cornerstone of adventure in the Harrogate and Yorkshire district. We envision a vibrant community, spanning all ages, united by the joys of exploration and the rewards of accomplishment.
With a dedicated team of 40, we're poised to make waves. Was it hard work? Undoubtedly. Was it worth it? Absolutely.
Inspired by the words of Timothy Chamlet from the new Wonka film, "Here's my destiny, I just need to unlock it. Will I crash and burn or go up like a rocket?" 🚀
Join us as we soar!

The best part of my job is getting to know the companies we work with.
Sometimes when we are REALLY lucky, getting to “know” them involves a Pickleball tournament.
If you’ve read my posts, you’ve probably seen me praising Lancaster County.
This week we got spend time with Merv King and the team at Beuta.
Another Lancaster gem.
Getting to work with companies like Beuta is what I love most about my job.
They are a talented team with a vision.
And they are growing crazy fast!
If you like board rooms, bureaucracy, big egos, strong opinions, and slow decision making, then you probably won’t think they are very much.
If you like seeing Amish family members working together manufacturing products they believe in. And you like seeing offices with kids art plastered over every inch of wall space. And a tangible excitement about growth and what the future holds. Then like me, you’ll probably think they are totally awesome.
I once came across the concept of a "working vacation" when I was young, and it’s stuck with me ever since. The idea was simple yet impactful: you’d pay around $2000—quite affordable compared to the typical costs of room, board, and touring. This fee covered everything from meals to transportation, and even included guided tours of the area. But what made it truly unique was the exchange: instead of just being a tourist, you’d spend part of your time volunteering at a sanctuary, perhaps bottle-feeding baby lions, cleaning enclosures (when the animals weren’t in them), painting barns, and more.
Imagine how something like this could benefit West Virginia. The state, rich in natural beauty and wildlife, could offer similar experiences—perhaps at animal sanctuaries, conservation areas, or even historical farms. By creating these immersive "working vacations," West Virginia could attract visitors eager for more than just a typical getaway. They’d be contributing to local conservation efforts, learning new skills, and forming connections with both the land and the community.
Not only would this bring in tourism dollars, but it could also foster a deeper appreciation for the state’s natural resources and cultural heritage. Volunteers would leave with memories and a sense of accomplishment, while West Virginia would benefit from the added hands-on help and the positive exposure.
Is it possible? Absolutely. With the right planning and partnerships, West Virginia could tap into a growing trend of experiential travel, offering visitors a chance to make a difference while enjoying an unforgettable vacation. #SustainableTourism#WestVirginia#ExperientialTravel#Conservation
