I'm often asked about the future of slag. Although steel producing processes are slowly moving away from Blast Furnace (BF) technology towards DRI and EAF methods (that don't produce cementitious slag) these technologies require a much higher grade ore which isn't widely available. So it's expected that BF will continue to dominate worldwide at least up to 2050. The Glenbrook steel mill in NZ doesn't use BF technology, so our slag has to be imported. What is the difference between Pressure Class and Thickness Class Ductile iron pipe? When Ductile iron pipe was introduced to the market in 1965, replacing cast or gray iron, pipe manufacturers agreed that there should be a standardized protocol for determining wall thickness. This standard included considerations to the inherent strength advantage of DI over its cast-iron predecessor.
