At the Terra.do's Learning for Climate Action fellowship, I had the chance to attend a workshop on how to use the En-Roads simulator to understand the implications of various environmental and social policies on climate change. En-Roads, a global climate simulator (developed by Climate Interactive, MIT Sloan School of Management and Ventana Systems, Inc.), helps us analyse the consequences of population, economic growth, land use, and other global policies on carbon management, transport electrification, renewable & alternative energies, forestation, agriculture, and land use.  The open tool lets us test out various permutations and combinations of initiatives to determine how to reduce global temperature to under 2°C. Climate Interactive, a TRFF Catalytic Climate Finance grantee, creates and shares tools that drive effective and equitable climate action. To that end, they create system dynamics-based tools and resources that are policy-relevant and decision-useful for motivating climate action. They engage decision-makers who can take effective action on climate change, share their tools and resources – and support people to use them – to inspire others to take action on climate change.

En-ROADS is a freely-available online simulator that allows users to explore the impact that dozens of policies—such as electrifying transport, pricing carbon, and improving agricultural practices—have on hundreds of factors like energy prices, temperature, air quality, and sea level rise. En-ROADS helps people make connections between things they care about and the possibilities available to help ensure a resilient future.
