Imagine 75k feral people a night screaming “He looks up grinning like a devil” at you every night. If there’s one thing Taylor Swift has taught us is that the bridge of a song can be the most loved part. It’s usually toward the end (like the line from “Cruel Summer” above). And it typically marks the transformation the character in the song has made, like this line from the “August” bridge: “So much for summer love and saying "us" 'Cause you weren't mine to lose You weren't mine to lose, no” And in your stories — that moment is the moment you (or the person your talking about) finally makes the change. It’s *why* we listened. It’s the payoff. And it’s the whole point of storytelling. When I work with clients to help them create their signature stories — we start with that moment first and then work backwards to make sure that everything that comes before it — is worthy of the change moment. Oh, but I do miss some Kurt Loder, MTV News! And he is spot on with this quote, even though it was likely first shared in the late 80's or early 90's. Things are so much different now, aren't they? What I love most about popular culture is the power it has to tell us stories and educate us on current issues or highly emotional situations... those stories can be related safely and more humanly when we view them through characters. When we view these issues from the outside looking in, that sometimes causes us to feel more empathy, or to understand a difficult subject clearer. Two movies that I still love to watch and gave me my very early education on gay relationships and the AIDS crisis are: TORCH SONG TRILOGY (1988) ...AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (1993) And I still think they are two of the best movies about both of these topics. Do you like Taylor Swift? I do like her songs, as I'm sitting here, watching her via Disney Hotstar (The Eras Tour). I don't like getting into war,s and euforias, so I don't buy the ticket. As I see one of my friends is in Singapore watching her, it just makes me think: Are there any pop-country singer as successful as Taylor Swift? So what is it that makes her different? What is it that makes any of you tempted to bought the ticket? My personal rule: When I leave a long comment, it resonates enough with me that I should make it a post of its own, so here are my thoughts on theatre kids being as great a foundation for a life of successful teamwork and discipline in the world of work as team athletics. Plus more. I often make this argument. On top of all your points, I'll add one more that has been particularly relevant to my life in tech: People think of "theatre kids," and they think about the big personalities they may have seen on screen. But making theatre takes a large team of people behind the scenes and on stage, many of whom are not big personalities, and many of whom don't fit neatly into the other high school cliques...theatre kids often think of themselves as theatre *geeks* and even as the misfits or oddballs (something the show Glee captured very early on in its run). The heterogeneity of the theatre kid cohort prepares you to work well with others who are not always just like you. And it prepares you to appreciate that it takes many different kinds of skills and roles to build the final product.

Anyone else over saturated on all things Taylor Swift? Sweet, me neither - so what can we learn from her to be better sellers and leaders? In everything she does, she’s different. She chooses to not be status quo, but rather to go a different route than the great majority of musicians. Punctuality (read: respectfulness): the (inarguably) biggest music star of the moment doesn’t make her fans wait, her shows start as close to 8pm as possible. Hype girl: show me another star even half as famous who knows the lyrics (or makes time to learn #SMYKM) of the songs being performed at the Grammys and who roots for others like her. Confidence: not everyone loves her but she shakes it off and brings a positive spirit to the stage and to life. Spotlight sharing: epitome of “how can I use my popularity and status to shine a light on others?” Generous and gracious spirit: she’s still surprised when she wins, she engages with her fans, she cuts massive bonuses to her crew to take care of her people. I love the example that she sets for people young and old, fans or not, and think often of all the positivity we can pull from someone who could be anything but all the above, if she’d so choose. #samsales

“Theater kids run the world” does not surprise me — I have long held that theater experience should be at least equal to sports experience in terms of a hiring signal. Here’s what former theater kids bring: 🤝 Teamwork Being part of a cast and crew is just like being on a team: you are committed to a group that needs you, you have to show up, your role is critical, and you succeed or fail as a group. 🔁 Persistence You come back every day to practice. You try to get better and better. You learn from your mistakes. Some shows go well, others not so much. Even so, you go back and do it again. And as a dancer, for me that persistence was every bit as physical as any other athlete. 🤔 Memory Much like memorizing plays and strategy, actors and dancers memorize lines and choreography and have to leverage these in the heat of the moment under lots of pressure. 🏃♀️ Quick thinking Someone forgot their line or blocking? You have to work around that real fast with many eyes upon you! Former actors are particularly good at reading and reacting to situations on the job. But wait, there’s more beyond analogies with athletics: 🥿 To put yourself in someone else’s shoes to get in character builds a lifelong skill set of empathy and perspective. 🎤 Theater kids are better prepped for public speaking, whether that’s in meetings or literally on stage. They are well positioned to help assemble folks around a vision and communicate inspiration. 🚀 In both theater and startups, you have to believe so aggressively in your talent while you’re chasing this seemingly impossible dream. Studies also show that kids who participate in arts programs (not just theater) improve their writing skills, and were more creative and hopeful than those who did not. The Taylor Swift Effext There’s an intersection between quality and quantity as it relates to putting out videos or social posts. As Randy Harris 🏒 put it, “To increase your odds of success, release quality content and release it often. Because it generates more shots at the basket. With more people cheering for those shots to go in” Anyoner similar message I recently came across from Alex Hormozi, “There is no such thing as a silver bullet, but there are 100s of golden BBs” Taylor Swift has put out and re-released 243 songs. High-quality, high-volume shots at the basket (and we know her success story The Beatles put out and released 213 songs. High-quality, high-volume golden BBs (and we know their success story). If your staffing firm is bought into the value of creating content, understand it is a quality AND quantity effort.
