In a competitive landscape where our rival heavily invested in marketing initiatives, neglecting essential groundwork, our approach differed significantly. Focusing on human interaction and relationship-building, we leveraged our strengths in personal contact. Ultimately, our emphasis on groundwork and personal connections enabled us to secure a significant portion of the market share without substantial marketing expenditures. The typical middle-market industrial manufacturer I work with spends $250K-$3MM/year on trade shows. That's the bulk of their marketing budget. And almost without exception, only 10-30% of the leads are meaningfully follow up on. In some cases only 30% get ANY follow up (a single sales call or email) and fewer get a reasonable series of multi-channel outreach with well researched and crafted content. And then companies build their budget for the following year (or two years for many of the big shows that occur in alternating years) with basically the same booth, staffing and overall budget commitment. Based on what? I can't think of another business function in a company where this kind of indifference would be accepted, much less subsidized annually! I hosted three roundtables this week for field and events marketers to discuss Sales & Marketing Alignment, and they were AWESOME conversations. The pretense this topic was built on was that without sales’ support, it’s nearly impossible to understand the realities of field marketing performance - and that really resonated, pretty much universally. A big takeaway that came out of each these sessions was the simple fact that sales doesn’t always know what marketers know. They might not be aware of: 💰 The amount of money you put into the event ⏰ How long it took to get approval 🌪 Or, the extent of the event logistics you’ve been juggling for months They also might not know why you’re actually doing the event. Relaying exactly the purpose of the event will help sales prepare, while mitigating feedback such as “the quality wasn’t there” or “we’re already engaged with all of these accounts” for events meant for brand awareness or converting existing pipeline. TL;DR communication is key (isn’t it always).
