New research published in Audiology and Neurotology sheds light on the relationship between frequency-to-place mismatch and hearing performance in cochlear implant users. The retrospective study by Laura Dessard et al. compared speech intelligibility performance using default frequency mapping to mapping utilizing anatomy-based fitting with OTOPLAN and MAESTRO. Results showed a correlation between speed of speech intelligibility acquisition and frequency mismatch. The future has never looked brighter! 🌠 Last week, we celebrated some brilliant young minds. We had the honor of hosting a group of 12 IDEASforEARS winners from around the globe at our headquarters in Innsbruck, Austria. From exploring the lab and visiting the AUDIOVERSUM science center to seeing how implants are made and meeting their implant makers, it was an unforgettable experience filled with joy and inspiration. This year's contest was even more special thanks to our collaboration with Microsoft. Commitment. Commitment to upholding the highest standards in securing our recipients, professionals, and other stakeholders’ sensitive data has propelled our team to implement and certify the Information Security Management System (ISMS) according to the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 international standard. Quirin Ilmer, PhD, Deputy Information Security Officer at MED-EL, shared more details on the importance of obtaining this certification. MED-EL: What steps were involved in obtaining this type of certification?  Quirin: We worked over many months to implement the information security framework specified in the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 standard and to further improve our information security awareness, security posture, and practices. During the two-stage external audit process, our ISMS has been evaluated by an accredited Certification Body to certify that it meets ISO/IEC 27001 requirements. M: Why is obtaining the ISO/IEC 27001 certification important for our recipients and their professional hearing team? Q: The security of our products and the preservation of privacy and protection of personal data is important to us as a manufacturer of hearing solutions. Certification to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 demonstrates our commitment to safeguard sensitive information entrusted by our recipients, professionals, and other stakeholders. M: How will MED-EL’s security-by-design approach benefit its devices, recipients, and professionals in the future? Q: This proactive stance will benefit future products and users by considering information security, cybersecurity and privacy protection during the whole product life cycle. Maintaining our ISO/IEC 27001 certification requires annual audits by the accredited certification body, furthering our commitment to improve our security practices. M: Is there anything more you would like to share about the project? Q: The ISMS implementation was a cross-collaboration effort across the organization. Careful analysis and planning, top management support, competent and motivated team, and effective communication are key factors when building an ISMS.

The cochlea’s natural structures are a fraction of the diameter of a human hair cell. This makes ultra-flexible electrode arrays necessary—so that no harm is brought to the cochlea during electrode array insertion. MED-EL’s FLEX arrays feature a tapered, rounded top, which gently glides through the round window and along the scala tympani, avoiding damage to the basilar membrane and delicate structures while offering the lowest reported risk of tip fold-over.
