Read Utano Newsletter's latest article on how communities at the heart of the mpox outbreak must feel right now. Despite Africa being at the epicentre of the outbreak, mpox vaccines have been made available to more than 70 countries outside the continent before 10'000 could be spared for the African continent of 1.2 billion people. This meagre quantity of vaccine is a stunning display of gross inequity in the international system charged with allocating global vaccine stockpiles in emergencies such as this. The Guardian has criticized inefficiencies in the way international agencies like the World Health Organization deal with global health emergencies highlighting the fact that it took the WHO until this month to initiate the process that would make vaccines available to African countries. The Africa CDC has not done much better either. It’s core mandate is to prepare for and respond to exactly this nature of continental public health emergencies. However, the Africa CDC leadership announced its negotiations with the manufacturer of the vaccine only last week. This outbreak did not take African nations by surprise. It has been steadily growing for moths prior. Why did the Africa CDC not initiate steps to ensure vaccines would be available to affected countries or pre-negotiate before this grave moment? Africa CDC initiating negotiations now may be too little too late because the manufacturer of the vaccine has ruled out selling vaccines directly to African countries indicating that not a single African country has made a request to purchase vaccines. African scientists have proposed the establishment of an African-led, multidisciplinary, multicountry Mpox Research Consortium (MpoxReC) in Africa with an overarching goal of establishing a research network to advance the elimination of mpox as a public health problem (with an initial focus on Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, and the Republic of the Congo). Since May, insulin pens have been running low in South African public hospitals and clinics after Novo Nordisk decided to stop supplying the health department because of “capacity limitations. 🌍 Weeks mpox vaccines have been made available in other parts of the world, Africa’s is expected to receive its first batch of mpox vaccines this week. The meagre 10,000 doses will be coming from a donation by the US government. 🌐 Vaccines have already been made available in more than 70 countries outside Afric. Last week, scientists warned that the failure to provide the continent at the epicentre of this global health emergency with anti-mpox vaccines until is a disturbing display of the inequity and inefficiency in the way international agencies deal with global health emergencies, medical officials. ◾ The minuscule amount of vaccine coming barely scratches the surface of the existing medical needs. Not to be ungrateful or anything but, this a mere face-saving gesture to say that something has been sent to African communities, but the truth os that the quaint is much too small to have meaningful impact on limiting community spread of the virus and protecting people at the heart of this outbreak.
