This is great news. How do we get more Female Athletic Directors? Let's celebrate all the ones who have made it. Give them a shout-out. Currently, only five out of the 65 athletic director positions are held by women. From Sandy Barbour in the Big Ten, to Jennifer Cohen in the Pac-12, to Heather Lyke and Carla Williams in the ACC, and Candice Storey Lee in the SEC, and Renee Baumgartner at Santa Clara. These exceptional women are, well, the exception. Working on the change - remind me of others.....     This afternoon Coach Saban met with the football team and informed them of his decision to retire. Words cannot adequately express our appreciation for his exemplary leadership and service to The University of Alabama over the past 17 years. We are grateful for the lasting impact he has made on the lives of our student-athletes and the incredible memories his teams have created for our students, alumni, fans and supporters. Coach Saban and Ms. Terry are tremendous ambassadors for The University of Alabama and our community and we celebrate their many contributions and indelible legacy. These have a global presence. However, if we stop to consider the audience for college football leagues and the level of excitement these matches bring, well, college football is unmatched. College football is part of American culture. It’s played a big role in the history of civil rights in the country. In the 1960s, the football teams in colleges were the first institutions to integrate white and black players. In the past, there were all-white or all-black teams.     It was a true delight to welcome back to campus the fun-loving Monica Bertino Wooden ’81 and her entourage of family and friends as we all celebrated Bertino Field at Butterfield Stadium. Even beyond Monica’s amazingly generous and transformative gift, our fans had much to cheer about last week: first, the opening of the field, which is now named in her honor, and then a decisive victory there on Saturday.     Jerod Mayo spent his entire playing career with the Patriots, became an All-Pro LB, and won a Super Bowl. Since, he’s spent his entire coaching career in New England, learning under Bill Belichick.     What an incredible message about facing fear head on and how we can all work to be more courageous by being vulnerable enough to work together to find solutions. This can be applied to all areas of life. If you are a leader I ask you this: Are you courageous enough to be vulnerable so that you can truly serve those who follow you? People often put leaders on a pedestal. It’s a natural thing to do when you respect someone. However, it often overshadows the many failures that the leader has overcome to get them to their current point in life. Leaders, you have a DUTY to be vulnerable with those that deserve it, but especially with your direct followers. Help them grow from your past struggles and subsequent lessons. Share your wisdom. Share your passion. LEAD the way!
