Architecture is changing to keep up with hurricanes and other severe storms. The Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be a busy one. Hurricane Ian pummeled Southwest Florida in September 2022. The category 4 storm killed 150 people and caused $112 billion in damage. Amid the devastation, The Luminary Hotel lost just one letter in the sign bearing its name. Architect Jonathan Rae said the building's "purposely straightforward" design helped keep it standing. "There are no complicated geometries, no alcoves, no recesses, those places are opportunities for wind forces to build up and create additional stresses on the building." The hotel's first floor is 15 feet above ground level, which prevented flooding. Backup generators are located on the building's second floor, so they were able to keep the hotel running. A slight bend in the structure even adds strength, according to engineer Amir Aghajani. No building can be hurricane-proof, but hurricane resilience is an achievable goal, Aghajani explained. This type of construction can be costly but can help prevent paying for repairs later, “what you're doing now is you're creating value.” At Florida International University's School of Architecture, students are studying and preparing for rising sea levels in the future. “

#hurricaneidalia has the potential to be an Above Design Level Event for the built environment, having made landfall as a category 3 hurricane with 125 mph one minute sustained windspeed (gusts may be higher). While a critically important metric, the one minute sustained windspeed used to define hurricane categories is not very useful for a direct comparison to the national wind speed design standards in ASCE 7, as the latter uses the 3-second surface level wind gust for its standard metric. Given that these standards are developed using historical information and not many hurricanes have hit the area where Idalia made landfall, the 3-second gust design windspeed in the landfall area is the lowest along the Florida coast, clocking in at only 110-120 mph!
