See the video below. Reed Hastings says "Hire like a Sports Team." I'll take it a step further. Most definitely, but make sure it's like Moneyball. As most people have learned "we're a family" is code for "we're not going to pay you." Another common refrain is "We need Rock Stars." Neither of these have ever worked, ever, and this is why. When you hire family you expect lifetime dedication with no pay. Your benefits are temporary. As for the rock stars, well, I've worked with them and let's just say they are really good but a lot to manage. In fact at one company their "rock star" became so difficult to control that they had to let them go because they assumed the lifestyle and attitude of an actual real life rock star. The damage done before they were finally shown the door almost derailed the product. It is true that hiring in today's business world is no different than hiring for a professional sports team. The problem you can run into however is that while having a LeBron or Jordan on the team is great, having five of them won't get you very far. Sure, you can have the dream team for a short time but eventually everyone will be vying for the spotlight and nothing gets done. This is why you want the Moneyball approach. Don't just look for one trait. Look for the right combination of strengths and weaknesses that can be leveraged to ensure success. Team cohesion is key to any business success. If all you're doing is managing egos then works not getting done. Hiring the right combination of people is good business both professionally, and economically. My wife and I are making a more concerted effort to watch the Olympics this year. With ratings for this year's event up significantly, we're not alone. We've been primarily watching Peacock, and I'm particularly impressed by the 'Gold Zone.' As a fan of Scott Hanson and the National Football League (NFL)'s RedZone, I find this format of showcasing the most exciting live events fantastic. The variety of events and the high-quality coverage have truly enhanced our viewing experience. However, one thing could improve the experience: quickly contextualizing a live event for viewers who join mid-progress. Imagine if they could introduce critical rules, storylines, and athletes right when you tune in. I'm picturing a series of "tickers" and graphics that prompt the user non-intrusively whenever they tune in.  This can happen automatically whenever someone joins the channel and can also live as an option the user can access at any time, with the Gold Zone editorial team constantly updating the "need-to-know" information. Another option could be more consistent cut-ins from the Gold Zone team, with them taking priority over the primary event announcer, one of RedZone's appeals. Regardless, it's been great watching such a range of events with athletes at the pinnacle of their careers representing their country. How are you watching the Olympics this year? You can’t win every time 🫣 Last night I had the honour of being gifted last minute tickets to the quarter final of the champions league for my team of Manchester City vs Real Madrid ⚽️ Despite multiple chances and the fact we’d come in to the game as likely to win, we didn’t 😢 In fact it came to a nail biting penalty after extra time - and man city were beaten by Real Madrid Any neutral fan would concur that City should have won as we dominated possession and had more chances (summary of my boyfriend, pictured who’s actually a lifelong United fan ☺️!) And of course there’s an analogy in here for recruitment 🤣📣⬇️ You can’t place everyone You can’t fill every job You can’t smash every target (And you need to take your chances when they are literally a wide open goal, Bernardo….) And do you know what?- that’s ok! Do you think Pep is bollocking the team today? Do you think he’s commiserating them? Do you think he’s regretting his player strategies? Maybe? Probably? (Alvarez should have replaced haarland sooner… in my opinion) But do you know what he and the players will be doing? Learning from their mistakes, from their missed chances, from what they should have done! And there lies the lesson for us all; if you fck up that is ok. As long as you learn from it. What makes us human is error and learning from it so we don’t repeat it (hopefully) Now back to Man City; who’s for us winning the league now? 🩵
