No employee is safe. Even your boss is not safe. Every employee, no matter where you are in the food chain, can be let go from a job at any time, for any reason (that does not fall under discrimination). That includes entry level to CEO. Yet, each and every day, I get a call from someone who is shocked, stunned and caught off guard by the fact that they were let go. Whether it was a reduction in force, layoff, separation, tiff with boss, someone hated the color of their shoes, they forgot to turn in their time-sheet, their new CEO does not like their cologne/perfume..... Or they had a bad day, made a snarky comment, were late for a meeting, got in a fight with a co-worker or someone just felt like they were making too much money. From top performer to under-performer, when someone wants you gone, you're gone. I am not suggesting that you live your life 'on edge' but don't fool yourself into believing that you are indispensable. Your first and only loyalty is to yourself and your family. Be prepared, always be open to new opportunities, know how to promote yourself and find a new job any day, any time.

The first step in finding a new path in life is realizing that you need one. There can be many catalysts that would compel someone to make substantial life changes: career, job, relocation. Reasons include lack of fulfillment, toxic work environment, lack of advancement opportunities, and salary. A different set of reasons will tell you that you should stay the coarse at your current job regardless of the reasons above, and many of these might be fueled by self-doubt. Listen for self-talk like this: “I’m too old to make a change” or “I don’t have the skills to do ______” or “no one is hiring right now”. The solution is to go for it! Read job postings, talk to you connections, and above all else, learn when to listen to the voice in your head, and when to silence it! While there’s a chance that you might realize that you need to stay where you are, it’s likely that you will be able to make a change! It all starts with taking stock of where you are and then beginning to dream again!
