As a fellow Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) veteran, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of honesty and integrity in how we represent our military service, both personally and publicly. The concept of “stolen valor”—when someone falsely claims a rank or combat experience they didn’t earn—can be troubling, especially when it contradicts the very Army values we hold dear: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These values are the foundation of what it means to be a soldier, and they guide us in our roles within the National Guard. The Guard’s commitment to our Nation is “Always Ready, Always There.” Every day, they demonstrate their unwavering obligation to protecting and serving the American people. Leadership in the military is more than just rank; it’s about trust, accountability, and standing by your unit, especially during challenging times. For those of us in the National Guard, this means not only being prepared to deploy where our nation needs us, but also embodying these values in everything we do, both in and out of uniform. As I think about how these values should guide us in every aspect of our lives, I’m curious to hear from others, veterans, service members, and supporters alike. How do we continue to uphold these principles of loyalty, integrity, and honor in our daily interactions and decisions, whether we’re in the field, at work, or in our communities?

History in 60 Seconds: What do you know about Roman Legions? The Roman legion was the backbone of the powerful Roman army for centuries. Here's a breakdown of some key points: 1) Elite Infantry: For most of the Roman Empire's history, legions were the elite heavy infantry of the Roman army. 2) Citizen Soldiers: Early legions were composed entirely of Roman citizens. After reforms by Marius in 107 BC, citizenship wasn't a requirement, but it remained a prestigious role. 3) Size and Organization: The size of legions varied over time, but typically consisted of around 5,200 men during the height of the Empire. They were structured into smaller units called cohorts, centuries, and contubernia. For comparison, a US Army brigade consists of a few battalions and anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers.
