The road to biodiversity credit mechanisms requires tough conversations... 🗣️ Maybe the toughest is how investors can build bridges with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, who manage territories where 80% of the world's biodiversity resides. I spoke to Jessica Smith from United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) on how this could happen, and how nature-based investors should be thinking about it. We discussed how not having free, prior and informed consent may be an investor risk, and what the financial sector more broadly is doing with understanding nature. Measurements of biodiversity need to be effective, robust and science-based, while securing broad consensus on what these are and allowing for heterogeneity reflecting the diversity of nature. 2. Buyers need to be confident that what they are buying is real and the claims they can make about them are credible, and that these support their business aims complementing corporate social responsibility and TNFD requirements. 3. Suppliers need to be able to ensure they can meet expectations of the market and safeguard integrity of their credits at an economical and fair price over the long term. 4. Nature’s stewards, including land managers, farmers, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, need to be involved in the design and development of these markets, have access to the biodiversity they preserve, and receive equitable rewards.

By investing in environmentally friendly technology and procedures, businesses may reduce their reliance on natural resources. Closed-loop recycling and cradle-to-cradle methods, for instance, can significantly lessen the need to extract natural resources and minimize end-of-life waste, lessening their impact on biodiversity. #climate #weareallinthistogether

Soil and Water Conservation for Sustainable Food Production, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem services of natural resources should be given top priority in the prevalent climatic anomaly related disaster management in all types of land uses. This approach of land use management will be helpful for reducing unusual anthropogenic pressures on natural resources. Thus, it will be helpful for achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
