I’ve returned to work a few times over my career, my breaks have ranged from a couple of months to over 10 years. Returning to work no matter how long you have been away can feel hard. Having the right support around you to: ⭐ Re-introduce you to the workplace ⭐ Help you get your knowledge back up to date ⭐ Boost your confidence ⭐ Reassure you that you’re going to be supported Makes all the difference 🥰 I can so clearly remember returning to work after one of my maternity leaves 😰 I sat down at my new desk, I had a computer I didn't recognize and two people sat down opposite me that I didn't know. I sat looking at my phone and thought dear god please don’t ring. I rushed to find my incredible assistant to tell her I couldn’t for the life of me remember how to transfer a call. If you have never had to return to work it’s not easy to understand how hard it can be. When I was considering returning to work after a 10-year break people would make comments like: 🤦🏼♀️ ‘Come on crack on’ 🤦🏼♀️ ‘You’re wasted at home' 🤦🏼♀️ ‘Just do it’ Now while the tagline 'Just do it.' might work really successfully for Nike. Please don’t use it as a motivational prompt for someone considering returning to work. Believe me, there are far more helpful ways of supporting a returner who has taken an extended career break. I wanted to do it, I was just finding it hard, and I needed some support. To the person who told me to 'Just do it.'
