It's American Education Week, a time to celebrate our nation’s school system, and I wanted to share 3 reasons why growing up in the public school system (& the teachers) helped shape me into the BEST version of myself 📚 ❤️ ✨ 1. Public school teachers don't get enough credit! I always loved school growing up because it was such a safe space to learn and grow -- my teachers set that tone. They encouraged my creativity, volunteered time to do extra help before & after school, became our first coaches in sports, and dared me to dream big. Apart from my parents, my teachers were my BIGGEST role models. Fun fact, for the longest time I wanted to be a 6th grade math teacher, and even now I love guest lecturing at Universities/teaching. I'm still in touch with many of my teachers to this day. 2. The resources (and reach) of public school can be incredible. I went to school at the 3rd largest public district in New York State (shoutout Sachem!), yet the teachers/schools always found a way to help me grow as an individual. Most notably, my first-ever professional jobs came through my high school -- my internship at Citi my junior summer (at 17!) came through the business department, same with my part-time job at a local law firm. I was also never short of learning/growth opportunities -- I took a class called "Wall Street & Investments" in 10th grade, participated in DECA & went to states, and was the President of the Business & Marketing Honor Society. My public high school gave me a LEG UP in pursuing a business degree for college applications. 3. The large ecosystem pushed me to be better (vs. a smaller private one). I think there's this misconception that private > public when it comes to education... I disagree. Granted every public school is different, but I felt very lucky to always feel supported & challenged. As an 8th grader, I had some *big goals* and wanted to be Valedictorian of my high school & get into a great college. I was a competitive soccer player at the time already playing for Varsity (was recruited as a 7th grader!) but was being asked to play for a private high school with a better academic record. I set up a meeting with Sachem's high school Principal at the time & he took my questions very seriously, giving me a tour of the school & laying out the reasons why staying within our *free* public district would set me up for success. And he was right... I had access to every resource I could ever need, and DID graduate as Valedictorian (in large part b/c of the incredible teachers who supported me). -- Is our education system in the U.S. flawed? Absolutely - there are many things that need to happen to make it more equitable and safe. But I can't help but be grateful to all the ways going to public school helped me develop a strong work ethic, love for learning, grit, and appreciation for our teachers/educators ❤️ 👩🏫 #americaneducationweek #publicschools #publicschool #education #teachers #teacher #students

As a graduating requirement at Spelman College, students must take the Braven Accelerator. In this course, you learn how to elevate your professionalism by engaging in group discussions, collaborating with your cohort, and completing a Capstone Project. The Capstone Project's problem statement is: Spelman College seeks to elevate its position into the top tier of liberal arts institutions by addressing critical factors like academic excellence, innovative pedagogy, campus culture, and diversity and inclusion. In this pursuit, Spelman must identify key strategies and initiatives that will not only distinguish it in the liberal arts landscape but also adapt to the evolving higher education environment and effectively serve the needs of underrepresented groups, particularly Black women. In response, our cohorts' objective was to restructure our First Year Experience (FYE) course for a narrowed and engaged discussion for career aspirations, networking, and campus experiences. My role in this Project was Project Manager. As Project Manager I lead team discussions, brainstormed ideas, and assessed weekly check-ins on progression. Attached below is our Capstone Project.

Early college/dual enrollment and early industry access to majority Black students at Pathways in Technology Early College High School Brooklyn is showing to be an on ramp to post-secondary completion rates that look different from the national averages. Ten years after the phase out of Paul Robeson High School, we are celebrating 10 years of producing CTE/STEM college graduates. Additionally, more than 20 schools across New York State are celebrating 10 year anniversaries. Today, May 11, 2024 scholar athletes BryAnn Sandy (Bachelor's from Georgetown University earned her Masters from American University) and Lailah White (Bachelor of Science Texas Christian University) who are also recipients of the highest sports honor, Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Wingate Award Winners. Beyond the Blue and Gold: The Marquette Effect That Keeps Giving Today, a familiar sight greeted me – the limited-edition "Give Marquette Day" socks, a vibrant splash of blue and gold in my mailbox. Let's be honest, these socks are fantastic (who can resist a little Marquette University swag?). But as I held them, a deeper reflection took hold – a reflection on why giving back to my alma mater goes far beyond a cool pair of socks. My journey with Marquette, especially the Marquette University Center for Real Estate, has been nothing short of transformative. It wasn't just about acquiring knowledge; it was about honing a skillset that continues to propel me forward in my career. The Center equipped me with the tools and confidence to navigate the intricacies of the real estate world, setting me up for success that I'm eternally grateful for. But my gratitude extends beyond my own experience. Marquette University is more than just an institution that grants degrees; it's a vibrant community that fosters growth, ignites passion, and leaves an indelible mark. The late-night study sessions fueled by camaraderie, the professors who pushed me to think critically, and the experiences that instilled a sense of purpose – these are the things that truly shaped who I am today. By giving back, I'm not just expressing that gratitude; I'm investing in the future of that very community. It's about ensuring current and future students have access to the same enriching experiences, the same exceptional faculty guidance, and the same unparalleled skill development that the Center for Real Estate provides. The future of the program is even brighter than its past, and I want to be a part of nurturing that potential. One innovative piece about the new Black Honors College program at California State University-Sacramento -- which president J. Luke Wood, PhD describes as "an honors college outside the HBCU that has this type of focus is incredibly unique, the only, the first, and it stands out in that way."-- is the option for transfer students who have already taken their general studies elsewhere. In this Voices of Student Success podcast episode, he explains the transfer option this way: <<Now we also have a pathway, though, for transfer students. Sacramento State, we’re a transfer-heavy institution—it’s part of our culture, has been for many years. We’ve got a lot of community colleges that really prioritize student sending their students here, because we’re kind of like Cheers: it’s that place where everybody knows your name, like, it really is like a caring environment and faculty members are really dedicated to students. So we’ll bring 50 in this spring, and then we’ll go to 75 every year thereafter, transfer students. And what they’ll do, since their general education will be completed, is they will be doing a minor in leadership, and then we’ll also have another group that’s doing a specific focus in real estate and land use development.
