Well, it seems the golden arches aren't quite ready for the robot revolution just yet. McDonald's is pulling the plug on its AI-powered drive-through tech in the US, after a string of hilarious mishaps went viral. The tech, which relied on voice recognition, has been tried in over 100 restaurants since 2019, but it appears the AI wasn't quite up to the task of deciphering our complex drive-through demands. We're talking bacon-topped ice cream and orders of chicken nuggets worth hundreds of pounds. The tech is set to be removed by the end of July, but McDonald's remains confident that a voice-ordering solution is still part of their future. It seems they simply need a bit more time to perfect their AI's "understanding" (and perhaps give it a crash course in basic food combinations). Until then, it's back to the good old-fashioned way of ordering – with a human voice and, hopefully, a lot less confusion.
