"Everyone should know how to grow their own food," shares Nallah Muhammed of Peaceful Seeds at Warnersville Community Farm in Greensboro, North Carolina. The farm not only grows food for the community, but nourishes minds and creates connections, too. Peaceful Seeds Farm works to return the land to the historic Warnersville Community through ag education and mutual aid. AFT's Women for the Land program collaborated with Black Family Land Trust, North Carolina State University Extension’s Local Food Program, and consultant Grace Summers to host our first cohort training in North Carolina from February to October 2023, funded by North Carolina USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Our cohort focused on connecting BIPOC farmers and producers with resources to extend their farming operations, promoting a more resilient food and agricultural system in the state. We aimed to: ✔️ Empower participants to implement climate-smart agricultural conservation practices and skills ✔️ Increase technical skills around diversifying production and marketing systems for more significant economic and healthy food systems’ resilience ✔️ Develop leadership skills to build community resilience around food and agriculture Learn more at https://bit.ly/3Uv8Xo0. Excited to share recent findings from my doctoral research and our policy team at Grassland 2.0. We (Adena Rissman, Yu Lu, Chuck Nicholson, Jeremy Foltz, Shaheer Burney, PhD, Luis Peña-Lévano, PhD) surveyed over 660 dairy farmers in Wisconsin on an array of issues including water quality, carbon, labor, and immigration, among other big socio-environmental issues we must tackle to transform food systems. https://lnkd.in/gF_MD7a3

Where will we get our food? The conservation of agricultural land in Tennessee is a top priority for us for many reasons, and the time to protect our farms and ranches is NOW. "Tennessee has lost 1.5 million acres of farmland to development, according to new data from the University of Tennessee. That figure equates to the loss of six counties' worth of pasture and forest land completely gone. By 2027, the amount of land loss is expected to rise to 2 million acres." If you love bourbon, you're going to support this initiative. The American white oak is in crisis, which could spell disaster for bourbon lovers, as it's the only acceptable material for bourbon barrels. In an acorn shell, without help, white oak populations will decline. Fortunately, as divisive as politics may be, the White Oak Initiative earned bipartisan support. Their goal is to restore white oak populations through research, strategy, and funding in collaboration with the public and private sectors. Distillers are already doing their part by researching and planting thousands of trees. This is such an amazing initiative. I keep getting invites to talk about the challenges of sustainable food chains with like minded professionals. Whilst they have value, the most value comes from talking to and engaging with those with power to change our system like Andrew and the farmers that fuel the food system. Not only do they need more airtime at events but the boardrooms need to don wellies and see what feeds their businesses and our bellies. After wrapping up on his family’s farm, we took a short drive to visit the plantation his family was enslaved on and now owns.” “While Rick is not the only Black multi-generational farmer working to continue a legacy, he is among the few. He is one of even fewer who has reclaimed the land their ancestors were enslaved on to breathe new life into it. Additionally to building community and self-reliance in Black farmers, The Browns value the worth of knowing their history and the sacrifices their ancestors endured to now benefit from their expansive land.” Patrick is building generational wealth. Here is an overview of our Farmer Inclusion program: https://bit.ly/483dr8N The program has engaged over 118 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color farmers in North Carolina. Looking through the book again over the weekend, " The Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert T. Kyisaki. Something got my attention that I will like to share. It read, " The year was 1956. I was nine years old. By twist of fate, I attend the same public school the rich sent their kids we are Primarily a SUGARCANE PLANTATION TOWN. The managers of the plantation and the other affluent people such as doctors, business owners, bankers sent their children to this elementary school". Reading this took me aback to ask these questions; How do I see a farmer and what made it so, what is my town known for? There is a geographic school of thought on Environmental determinism; which explains that given mans surroundings and it's God, nature's given resources man will make the most by exploiting sustainably these resources. Government assistance may or may not come, but we must create a niche on what we and our town should be known for not just limited to agriculture but other unique technical and human resources. Though, limited by the security level were government needs to play a major role, we must begin to look back at how most great civilizations came about and it will amaze you to know that tilling the soil was pivotal Through our formative years in school we learnt agriculture and not agricbuisness, It changed most persons opinion towards what it really entails. To cap it all most work done at the school farm we did it to serve punishment for one or two offences and this sank down the believe that farming is synonym to suffering, punishment and for defaulters. But this is not true. The truth is we must not be carried away by the chicken litle wave and the one in us, we must at one point or the other seat back, know the status -quo, what did we miss and how can we meet-up Happy new week!!
