First ever Birmingham Housing Week chance for young people and communities ‘to shape city’s blueprint’. Young people and communities are being urged to use the first-ever Birmingham Housing Week to “look beyond the hard hats and bricks” and explore the raft of housing sector career opportunities as part of a city masterplan to deliver high levels of new jobs, homes, investment, and green space. The rallying call comes as it was confirmed the action-packed week will be taking place from February 5th-9th 2024 and will centre on addressing housing provision in the city, while highlighting the investment and employment opportunities within Birmingham's current and future housing landscape.  Young people will play a significant role in the week, with events ranging from challenges to hearing from sector experts in sessions on the various careers in housing in an exciting time for the city. Stuart Penn, Regional Managing Director at Lovell Partnerships Ltd said: “Birmingham Housing Week provides a remarkable platform to shine a spotlight on substantial investments in advancing homes within the city. Our focus extends beyond the physical structures; it’s about placing communities at the heart of the plans and creating meaningful opportunities for the younger generation who can use the week to explode any myths and look beyond the hard hats and bricks and play a huge role in shaping the city’s masterplan and ensuring we have the homes and places this great city needs for the future." The One Seattle Comprehensive Plan has set out with lofty goals—goals which, as a developer deeply invested in this city's future, I share. However, to realize the vision of affordability, we must confront the elephant in the room - the unreasonably high costs and red tape that developers face in Seattle. We're tasked with updating aging sewer, water, sidewalk infrastructure and trees, navigating a maze of inspections and permits, and contending with the arbitrary interpretations of inexperienced inspectors. The MHA fees alone are a formidable barrier to affordability. On top of this, developers find little support in managing unauthorized occupants, facing both fines and potential loss of property rights. We can't afford to ignore these issues if we're serious about building a Seattle that's accessible to all. Let's roll up our sleeves and address the real costs of development, so our city can thrive without passing undue burdens onto those we aim to house.

It takes a dismal 26 months for #SanFrancisco to process applications for new housing -- an issue that has helped lead the city to become known for its scourge of #homelessness. As a result, the city has become the first in the #California, to find itself subject to the provisions of a statute -- SB423 -- which gives the state the power to step in and eliminate many of the hurdles that stand in the way of meeting state-mandated housing quotas. According to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, “San Francisco being subject to SB423 means that most proposed housing projects will not require approval from the Planning Commission and therefore won’t be able to be appealed to the Board of Supervisors. Most projects won’t have to undergo extensive environmental reviews”. The bill was sponsored by State Senator Scott Wiener, who proclaimed in a July 1 press release that “A confusing and overgrown permitting process has been throttling housing construction in San Francisco for decades. California Community Reinvestment Corporation (CCRC) was proud to sponsor San Gabriel Valley Consortium on Homelessness’s 2024 Housing Summit: "A New Season: Making Space For Affordable Housing" in San Dimas, CA! In addition to supporting the facilitation of this event, the Summit was also attended in-person by CCRC Relationship Manager Ting Xiao, who canvassed with other housing advocates to understand the implications of public policy on housing in the state of California. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s first Executive Directive, which streamlines affordable housing permitting, was a pertinent topic of discussion, as well as progress towards housing on faith-based organizations’ land and the future of the YIGBY (Yes In God’s Backyard) movement. Additionally, event attendees discussed methods of destigmatizing affordable housing within communities who oppose further developments. This advocacy work is indispensable to reversing decades of destructive narratives on affordable housing, which hurt the effort to guarantee stability and shelter to all Americans. The data on these important frameworks was made available by University of California, Berkeley’s Terner Center for Housing Innovation, Alliant Strategic Development, City of Pomona and National Community Renaissance. Creative legislative and advocacy solutions continue to move the needle on the housing crisis, and events like the 2024 Housing Summit are key to understanding how best to navigate a constantly changing housing landscape. As Seattle moves forward, it's important that we as residents and Citizen Architects, urban planners, engineers, design professionals, etc get involved in the comprehensive plan process moving forward. The draft is out for public comment and public open houses have been scheduled. As two diverse and fast-growing metropolitan areas, DC and Atlanta share many similarities. Unfortunately, a critically low affordable housing supply is one of them. Housing fairness is also an issue we’re dedicated to addressing and raising awareness of at Leadership Greater Washington. Lack of affordable housing impacts our communities and is detrimental to racial justice. Understanding the roots of this issue and steps we can take to address it is essential for leaders in our region. The Bipartisan Policy Center delves into the challenges that create the lack of available homes at affordable prices that, in turn, threaten to displace residents. While its research is specific to Atlanta, it reflects some of the challenges that face communities like ours across the country. #affordablehousing #racialjustice
