Happy Independence Day - The Story of Paul Revere Paul Revere is famously known for his midnight ride on April 18, 1775. Revere, a silversmith in Boston, was deeply involved in various groups opposing British rule. His active participation in political circles and community organizations made him a quintessential "Connector" in Malcolm Gladwell's terminology, which refers to individuals who know a large number of people and can bring them together. On the evening of April 18, Revere was alerted by Dr. Joseph Warren that British troops were preparing to march to Lexington and Concord to arrest leaders of the colonial resistance, such as Samuel Adams and John Hancock, and seize their hidden weapons and ammunition. Recognizing the urgency, Revere quickly set off on horseback to warn the colonial militia of the impending British attack. Revere rode through the Massachusetts countryside, spreading the alarm from town to town with a simple but urgent message: "The British are coming!" His ride covered multiple towns, including Charlestown, Medford, and Lexington, and he alerted every key patriot along the way. His deep connections within the community meant he knew exactly which doors to knock on and whom to alert to ensure the message would spread rapidly. Revere's ride was incredibly effective because he was not just a Connector but also a Maven. Mavens are individuals who accumulate knowledge and have a passion for sharing it, providing the information needed to catalyze change. Revere’s extensive knowledge of the local geography, key individuals, and political dynamics allowed him to effectively communicate the threat and mobilize the resistance. As a result of Revere’s efforts, the colonial militia, known as the Minutemen, were prepared and waiting when the British troops arrived in Lexington and Concord. This readiness led to the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. The initial skirmishes were critical in galvanizing the colonial forces and sparking the broader conflict that would eventually lead to American independence. Paul Revere's midnight ride exemplifies how the actions of a single individual, equipped with the right knowledge, connections, and sense of urgency, can ignite significant historical events. We can acknowledge and even celebrate the truth of our history together without dissension. Reality: On this day in 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, approximately 2000 Union troops arrived in Galveston and declared by executive decree that slaves were free. This order freed over 250,000 black people that were still enslaved in Texas. Why was it delayed? The Emancipation Proclamation could not be implemented in areas that were under Confederate control. Why do we acknowledge and celebrate this day? We acknowledge it because it happened. We celebrate it because the freedom of any person or people who was once unfairly held in bondage, abused and mistreated, should be celebrated. Though there was and still is in some places an uphill battle, freed slaves who survived faced many hardships and heartaches. Many searched for family members that they had been separated from hence the importance of reunions. They had to figure out the safe places where they could gain employment and settle. They were resilient during times when many would have given up and their resilience led to the progression of a people and progression a country. A call to action: No matter your race or ethnicity, don’t be afraid to acknowledge the hard truths of our past as well as the good. The important part is to work in unity today and not allow for the mistreatment and abuse of others to happen again. Juneteenth for many in our country is a day of celebration, marking the at least symbolic end of slavery in the United States on June 19th, 1865. It is an important celebration that should be honored by all, particularly as many would want to erase part of our history. Given that this day was over 2 months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, almost 3 years after the Emancipation Proclamation (which only applied to areas occupied by Confederate forces), and a month after the disbanding of the Confederate military department in Texas (not to mention after the ratification of the United States Constitution decades earlier), Juneteenth can very possibly be an example of the Rev. Dr. King's statement that "justice too long delayed is justice denied." I believe those of us who identify as white and continue to enjoy the privileges our culture extends with that, we must be mindful of the ongoing work we each need to do both internally, in our families, our communities, our places of employment, in our civic engagements, our faith communities, and any other sector of our lives as we move toward equity and inclusion for all persons. For many of us, we must be careful not to think a celebration absolves us from the work that still needs to be done. The Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued on Jan. 1, 1863, didn’t go into effect until more than 2 ½ years later, on June 19, 1865. That’s when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to free all enslaved people. Juneteenth blends the words “June” and “nineteenth” and has been celebrated since 1866. Celebrations can include church-centered community gatherings to highlight African-American freedom and arts. President Joe Biden signed legislation in 2021 establishing Juneteenth as a U.S. federal holiday. Staten Island, one of New York City's five boroughs, boasts a rich and diverse history. One fascinating chapter is its role during the American Revolutionary War. Known as the "Forgotten Borough," Staten Island was strategically important due to its location near the entrance to New York Harbor. In the early stages of the war, British forces recognized the island's value and swiftly occupied it in 1776. This occupation provided a secure base for the British, from which they could launch operations into New Jersey and Manhattan. The presence of British troops also influenced local loyalties—many Staten Islanders were loyalists who supported the British cause, which led to internal conflict and strife among the residents. The island was the site of a notable peace conference in September 1776, held at the Billopp House (now known as the Conference House). Here, American delegates including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge met with British Admiral Lord Howe in an unsuccessful attempt to negotiate peace before the escalation of the war. Despite these historic events, Staten Island's role in the war is less commemorated compared to other New York City sites, preserving its title as the "Forgotten Borough." Today is Juneteenth. Some of you may be asking what Juneteenth is - and I would counsel you to stop asking and start researching. It doesn't take much to google it and check out the entry on wikipedia (https://lnkd.in/gcennVVF). Now is that sufficient? No. It's a start. Understand how the day became a federal holiday (though not recognized by all organizations). Then ask why some companies don't enable their employees to celebrate African American history (or at least without taking an unpaid holiday or one of their vacation days). Or ask why/how the 250k enslaved people who were freed on June 19, 1865 were still held in slavery over 2.5 years after the emancipation proclamation was issued? Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery.
