New Post: Billboard Explains: Benson Boone’s Beautiful Chart Success - https://lnkd.in/geiQraxT - Benson Boone has become the latest male pop star to enter the scene, and to celebrate his recent success, Billboard is diving into his musical journey in the latest installment of Billboard Explains. The Monroe, Wash., native discovered his love for music when his friend asked him to join their group for a Battle of the Bands competition. He went on to audition for American Idol, where he received a standing ovation from the judges. However, he ultimately decided to drop out of the competition to pursue his music career and signed to Imagine Dragons’ lead singer Dan Reynolds’ label, Night Street Records. On the Billboard charts, Boone debuted at No. 33 on the Emerging Artists chart in October 2021. His first Hot 100 track, “Ghost Town,” entered the chart at No. 100. His biggest hit to date is “Beautiful Things,” which went viral on TikTok and debuted at No. 15 on the Hot 100, and later peaked at No. 2. New Post: Post Malone’s Headlining Set at Gov Ball: Not Much Country, But Tons of Hits - https://lnkd.in/dcWt-9B9 - It’s sort of a weird time to be Post Malone. On one hand, he’s coming off the two most-difficult, least-successful albums of his career — the last of which, 2023’s Austin, failed to even generate a single top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit, marking a clear commercial low point for the pop-rap gold-spinner who was surpassed only by Drake in terms of consistent chart success for the second half of the 2010s. On the other hand, he’s already had two No. 1 hits this year, albeit both with co-stars (Taylor Swift and Morgan Wallen, respectively) whose radio and streaming clout currently easily eclipse his own. Further complicating things: The latter of those two No. 1s marks the beginning of his long-hyped full foray into country music, a genre he has some obvious spiritual kinship with, but only tangential musical relation. This was a lot to balance for Post Malone during his headlining set at day one of New York’s Governors Ball festival (now officially referred to as just “Gov Ball”) — or at least, it seems like it should have been. But instead of trying to thread the needle between his successful past, his muddier present and his uncertain future, Post decided to simplify things with Gov Ball setlist: He simply played the hits. And he’s got a lot of them: more than you may even remember, more than maybe seems possible for a guy who’s only been making ’em since 2015 and has been in a relatively fallow period for ’em since the decade turned. As far as streamlining strategies go, it was a pretty undeniable one. “My name is Austin Richard Post,” the singer-rapper introduced himself after his first two songs, “and I’m here to play some s–tty songs and get a little bit f–ked up while we do it.” Whether dismissing his signature hits as “s–tty” was a sign of residual bitterness over his heavier, more personal recent work not being received as warmly as his debauched early hits or just the artist not taking himself too seriously, it ended up not really mattering, since it became clear pretty quickly Post was not interested in relitigating anything about his career on the evening. Instead, he played one smash after another — from “Better Now” and “Wow” through “Circles” and “Congratulations” — while gleefully shimmying, screaming, two-stepping and stripping (his shirt, anyway) on stage, looking every bit the superstar he was at his commercial peak. The question of a Post Malone gig has traditionally not been whether he’d seem like a star, but what kind of star would lead the way: rap star Post, rock star Post, pop star Post, or now even country star Post? In truth, he’s been all four for some time — well, the first three, anyway, with the fourth seemingly on its way. But

New Post: Every Artist With 100 or More Billboard Hot 100 Chart Hits - https://lnkd.in/g55qSZni - Debuting a song on the Billboard Hot 100 is a highlight of any musician’s career. It’s Billboard’s premier songs chart after all, and the stars often must align in order to stand with the best of the best. The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. In total, more than 8,000 artists have landed a song on the survey, dating it the chart’s launch on Aug. 4, 1958. Of those artists, only 19 have charted at least 100 total songs. Elvis Presley, whose career predates the Hot 100’s launch, became the first artist to tally 100 total hits. He scored his 100th (of an eventual 109 total) in May 1975 with “T-R-O-U-B-L-E.” He held the record for the most overall chart entries until 2011, when the Glee Cast surpassed him, and then nearly doubled his total — reaching 207 entries. That record stood until 2020, when Drake stormed past the TV troupe when his track “Oprah’s Bank Account” debuted. Drake now leads all artists with a whopping 333 total entries on the chart in his career (through the Hot 100 dated July 27, 2024). He’s the only artist to chart at least 300 total songs in history. Only two other acts have charted at least 200: Taylor Swift (264) and the Glee cast (207). Three artists joined the 100-hits club in 2023: YoungBoy Never Broke Again achieved the milestone in May and, fittingly, became the youngest artist to ever reach the feat, at age 23; Lil Uzi Vert became the 14th act to join in July, after releasing Pink Tape; and Travis Scott then joined the club on Aug. 12, thanks to the arrival of his LP Utopia. Four artists have joined the club in 2024, so far: 21 Savage was the 16th artist to reach the milestone, thanks to his album American Dream, followed by Beyoncé after releasing Cowboy Carter, then The Weeknd, thanks to his guest appearances on Future and Metro Boomin’s We Still Don’t Trust You, and then Eminem after releasing The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace). As for who might be next in line to join the elite group, the artists just short of 100 career entries are Bad Bunny (currently at 94), Young Thug (93), Lil Durk (92), the late James Brown (91), J. Cole (87), Metro Boomin (87), Gunna (86), Ariana Grande (84) and the late Juice WRLD (80). While it’s rare for artists to chart triple-digit entries on the Hot 100, it has become a more regular occurrence since the ranking began including streaming figures in 2007. Here, “Good Luck, Babe!” has risen to No. 10 on the Hot 100, making cross-metric inroads on streaming, radio and sales. Album cuts “Hot To Go!,” “Red Wine Supernova,” and “Pink Pony Club” have followed on the Hot 100, and due to the U.S.’s dominant impact on the world music economy, on the Global 200. On Global Excl. (The week’s average among all songs that are on both the Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. is 75% outside the U.S., reflecting a mix of big U.S. hits and those that have not made notable impacts on U.S. shores). Over the course of the last seven weeks, “Hot To Go!” has expanded its international reach from 35% of its overall streams, to 44%. Roan’s 10 most-streamed songs average 41%, up from 35% just three weeks ago. While these figures show that international audiences are helping spark Chappell Roan’s rising profile, her non-U.S. percentages are more in line with country and hip-hop artists than pop singer-songwriters. Pop icon Madonna is being sued for breach of contract by two fans who, alongside thousands of others, had to wait two hours beyond the scheduled start time for her New York concert in December. The plaintiffs are seeking to expand their lawsuit into a class action on behalf of all affected fans. The show was supposed to start at 8:30pm but commenced instead at 10:30pm. The plaintiffs allege that by the conclusion at circa 1am, they were 'confronted with limited public transportation, limited ride-sharing, and/or increased public and private transportation costs'. Is there any merit to the action? Well, sort of. It is, after all, a breach of contract. Madonna was meant to play at a certain time and failed to do so. If it were an insignificant delay of mere minutes, then the de minimis principle would apply. Two hours, though? It could arguably constitute a breach of condition. That said, the terms would almost certainly account for delays and stipulate that they are both foreseeable and should be anticipated. There'd be disclaimers galore as well. These terms would largely dispense with the contract case, unless a brave court implied a restraint upon such terms and reined them in a bit. Even if the fans won, what would be the damages? Their claim would be limited perhaps to their increased transportation costs and any other expenses associated with the delay. The lawsuit will cost them more than their losses. Madonna has actually been sued for late starts twice before, and both lawsuits were voluntarily withdrawn. I suspect this one will too. You can't be too much of a 'fan' if you sue your idol. But hey, we're living in a material world...

New Post: Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Label Names Lorne Padman to President - https://lnkd.in/gsaGMcez - Steve Aoki‘s longstanding Dim Mak label has a new president, with Lorne Padman — the imprint’s vp for the last decade — assuming the position. In the role, the Los Angeles-based Padman will oversee strategy for the imprint, which was founded by Aoki in 1996 while he was a student at UC Santa Barbara. The current Dim Mak roster includes producers like Henry Fong, Chyl, Ookay, Deorro, Cash Cash, Cheyenne Giles, Sikdope, 4B and more, with upcoming releases from Ray Ray, Mila Falls, Nostalgix and Aoki and Afrojack’s collaborative Afroki project, among others. “Throughout Lorne’s ten years as vice president, he has been an integral part of the label’s success story,” Aoki tells Billboard. “His ability to cultivate strong relationships within the industry has been critical in elevating the reputation of Dim Mak’s brand. The idea, Padman says, is to offer a “complementary roster of different sounds, from really fresh underground and cool and new. But also, a bit like a financial portfolio, you can’t only be taking moonshots, you also need to have some established things that will guard our reputation and can also financially open the possibility of being able to take swings at emerging artists.” Taking swings is built into Dim Mak’s business model, with the label’s New Noise imprint having released music from a totally new artist every two weeks for the last decade. This structure offers artists with what is often their first official release, providing them with the Dim Mak visibility boost while helping the label identify emerging sounds and trends. New Post: Morgan Wallen’s ‘One Thing at a Time’ Returns to No. 1 on Billboard 200 for 17th Week - https://lnkd.in/gFHDTBY3 - Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time climbs back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Jan. 20), stepping 2-1 and collecting its 17th nonconsecutive and total week atop the list. It earned 61,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 11 (down 4%), according to Luminate. One Thing at a Time continues to have the most weeks at No. 1 among all albums since Adele’s 21 logged 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the tally in 2011-12. One Thing at a Time debuted atop the chart dated March 18, 2023, and spent its first 12 weeks at No. 1 through early June. It then logged another three weeks in a row atop the list in late June and early July, and nabbed its 16th week in charge on the Oct. 14 chart. In the album’s 45 weeks on the list, it has never dipped below No. 6. One Thing at a Time finished 2023 as both the No. 1 year-end Billboard 200 album and Luminate’s year-end top album. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. After adding BTS as the greatest pop star for 2020, we decided to expand the project a little bit. For the last two years, we’ve counted down our picks for the 10 greatest pop stars of the year, with full essays for everyone from No. 10 (Nicki Minaj last year) to No. 1 (Bad Bunny last year), as well as bonus write-ups for our picks for Rookie and Comeback of the year, and even 10 close-but-not-quite honorable mentions. (And we measure this over the entire 2023 calendar, so if you were only heard from at the beginning or end of the year — or only had one big song or moment — that’s gonna hurt your performance here as well.) You’ll probably get the hang of what we mean. Read on below for our best-of-the-rest picks in alphabetical order, and apologies to all the veteran hitmakers and rising phenoms whose presence we couldn’t make room for with just 10 honorable mention spots — it was a huge year for pop stars new and old, and even a top 50 we would’ve probably ended up leaving someone out. GUNNA Their Year in Pop: We all love a comeback, don’t we? To bookmark his return home from a six-month prison stint following his Alford plea to a single charge of racketeering in the greater YSL RICO case, Gunna went back to basics with top 50 hit “Bread & Butter.” That song was featured on Gunna’s acclaimed 2023 album A Gift & A Curse, which found the rapper facin
